PRIORITY ONE--BrightBytes Survey

Have you taken the BrightBytes survey? If you (and your students) haven't yet, please--- stop what you are doing and complete the survey to share your honest thoughts and experiences. It is pretty quick!

Use the link on your website and complete the survey right now (before the end of THIS WEEK) then come back to the newsletter. Thanks!

Engaging content practice? Check out Quizizz!

If you have used Kahoot, you know how much students love game- based review. Some people don't feel the Kahoot love because of the timed aspect of the game. Quizizz is just the solution! It is fun, game-based, and it is timed, but students move at their own pace.

It is really easy to put in your own multiple choice questions! Want to try it out? I made a quick game!

See how Quizizz integrates with Google Classroom by reading this quick blog post!

Flip for Flipgrid!

Flipgrid is a website that is like a selfie video bulletin board. So great for students to give feedback, explain their learning, practice their language structures, respond to a 'what if' question... all while practicing their listening and speaking skills with an authentic audience of their peers!

The best way to understand Flipgrid is to check it out! Here is a Flipgrid explorer about BRAINS, so you can see how it works. You can create a board with a prompt so your students can respond. I would love to help you get started with Flipgrid!

*** Dave Burgess is coming to Ventura County to speak! We are all so excited at the opportunity! ***

Because HESD is hosting, all Hueneme staff can get a free ticket. This will not change!

Here is the new twist:

  • Our colleagues from outside the district can get a ticket to attend for only $10 in December (price will increase in January)
  • Invite 3 people to join us, and you will win a Teach Like a Pirate t-shirt! (fine print: they have to put your name in the referral box when they get their ticket, and they have to actually attend the amazing event)

So, invite far and wide! Spread the word! Share the Eventbrite link!

Let's show Dave Burgess that Hueneme, and all of Ventura County, is ALL ABOUT engaging instruction for our students!

Click here to get your free ticket!

(Seriously, click this link to register. You don't want to miss this opportunity)

The time for Digital Citizenship is always now!

Our jr. high teachers will tell you--- kids USE social media, and not always in a healthy way. They will probably also tell you--- trying to reach jr. high students to CHANGE their habits is challenging. These are concepts that we need to embed, in an age appropriate way, much earlier. Digital Citizenship is so much more than a lesson, it needs to be embedded in conversations, the way we teach physical citizenship.

How to be a friend. How to be kind. How to protect your privacy. How to make smart choices. We teach them these things in real life--- it is time to cross that bridge into the virtual, digital world.

Check out the HESD Tech STEAM Lending Cupboard

(suggestions for catchier name welcomed...)

We have a few resources that can be checked out and used in a technology/STEAM Unit with your students. Contact Liz (lhoppe@hueneme.org or x9832) for more information.

Available now:

* Ozobots

* Dot and Dash robots

* Breakout EDU boxes

These resources will present your students with opportunities to practice the 4 Cs and their growth mindset as they learn!

Save Time! Be more organized! Get Googly with Google Classroom!

If you are using Google Classroom, you know that it makes managing files from students easy while helping students build stamina for online writing-- not to mention lightening that wheeled crate of papers some of us take home!

If you haven't started using Google Classroom yet, THIS CAN BE YOUR YEAR! Create a class, add students easily with a join code, create an announcement for information sharing or online class discussion (think Facebook stream), and create a question for short constructed response answers that go directly to you, not viewable to all students.

Complete the form below to be part of an email group to get more info about using Google Classroom!

Digital Citizenship--- a thread woven, rather than a lesson taught

The beginning of the year is the most natural time to introduce digital citizenship concepts with your students. You probably are familiar with the one lesson your grade level teaches, but there are four more. Look though your grade level, and earlier grade levels, and use the lessons that meet the needs of your students. It is important that we are all learning how to be safe online!

Click here to see your Digital Citizenship resource options!

K1 teachers--- an easier link is coming to help you. Watch for "K1 Wonders" in shortcuts! (we are still working on this!)

DO NOT move cords, plug/unplug cords etc. at this time.

Please submit a tech support ticket and let the trained technicians do their work. This is the best way to make sure the system is functional for all users!
