Classification and Characteristics
The Strawberry is a founding member of the BERRY family! First grown in France during the 18th Century, French Royal Charles V considered the Strawberry a delicacy and had over 1,200 Strawberry plants in his garden.
Now cultivated all over the world, the Strawberry is summertime favorite enjoyed by many. The three most common variaties include the Alpine, the Allstar, and the Diamante.
Strawberries are green at first, but once ripe, they turn into a vibrant red color. In a perfected state, they have a conical shape and a sweet flavor. Each berry can contain upto 1,000 individual seeds, which are not removed in order to be consumed.
COOKING
The Strawberry's sweet flavor and firm texture lend itsself to use in many dessert foods, however, true culinarians respect their presence in savory creations. Commonly used in cakes, tartes, tortes, ice cream, and smoothies, Strawberries can also star in salads and main dishes.
