Coastal Plain
One of 3 regions in North Carolina. The area that is next to the Atlantic Ocean.
Tidewater
Part of the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina. The area where the ocean comes inland.
Piedmont
One of the 3 regions of North Carolina. The region that is in the middle of both the Appalachian Mountains and the Coastal Plain.
Mountains
One of the 3 regions of North Carolina. The region that is farthest from the Atlantic Ocean
Backcountry
Area that people lived that was furtherest away from the land near the coast (often the furthest away from towns)
Fall Line
Imaginary line the divides the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. A fall in the elevation of these two areas.
Outer Banks
The most famous of the Barrier Islands. The Outer Banks extends along the northern half of the state coastline.
Sounds
A relatively narrow passage of water between larger bodies of water or between the mainland and an island.
Barrier Islands
Small islands at the Outer Banks that consist of a long ridge of sand spread along the ocean floor. Most of the barrier islands are less than two miles long.
Region
One of the 5 themes of geography. Where the geographical area is different from other areas around it. (example: mountains, piedmont, coastal plain).
Estuary
Bodies of water where fresh water from rivers mix with salt water from the ocean.
