FIRST GRADE NEWS
Our fabulous First graders are working super hard and learning so much! Here’s a peek into our fantastic first grade learning!
The Intervention groups are doing amazing and we are so proud of the great things happening in each of the classrooms! We’ve learned all about short vowel sounds/patterns and moving onto long vowel families, learning about their rules and spelling patterns. Students are using all they know about sounds to figure out unknown words when reading harder text and to spell words with greater accuracy within their writing.
Our reading focus this month is exploring the exciting world of nonfiction! The students love reading about real life topics and filling their schema with so many new facts. We are working really hard to identify and understand the many nonfiction text features in order to navigate the text and better understand what we read. Students have transitioned from writers to teachers as they write their “expert book” to share their knowledge of a topic and teach their friends.
First grade mathematicians are learning and adding new math strategies to our “math strategy toolkit” each day in order to increase our fact fluency! We are using various strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems and show our math thinking.
Last, but not least, we are “over the moon” learning about the solar system and planets. We are scientific researchers, learning about the different planets as we gather facts within our daily research centers.
Our First Graders are… Out of this world!
