The Three Parts of Gaul
Belgica
- Furthest part of Gaul
- The Belgae (Belgians) live here and are considered the bravest out of the three.
- Surrounded by the Rhenus, Sequana, and Matrona rivers.
Celtica
- Largest part of Gaul
- The Celtae (Celts) live here.
- Three tribes: the Aedui, Sequani, and Helvetii.
- Surrounded by the Sequana, Matrona, Rhenus, and Garumna rivers and the Iura mountains.
Aquitania
- The closest part of Gaul especially to the "Province".
- The Aquitani (Aquitanians) live here.
- It is surrounded by the Garumna river.
Points of Interest for the Romans
- Abundant water sources from the 4 rivers
- Easier access to the oceans
- Protection from outside forces (rivers/mountains)
- Close to Rome for easier traveling
The Three Tribes of Celtica
Aedui
- Aedui (Aeduans) live in the middle of Celtica.
- Leader is Diviciacus
Sequani
- The Sequani live between the boundaries of the Aedui and the Helvetii.
- Their previous leader was Catamantaloedes, whose son, Casticus, was trying to seize the territory.
Helvetii
- Their leader is Orgetorix.
- Caesar tells us that they "surpass the other Gauls in valor"
- Almost daily wars with the Germani (Germans).
