A Note from the Principal

"Joe Pesci taking it down the lane for a lay up," were one of the many funny and entertaining comments that were heard at our Harlem Wizards vs Seylar Stars basketball game last month. It was wonderful to see so many parents, students, and community members laughing and having a good time. Below is a highlight video of the basketball game.

I would also like to say "thank you" to our Home and School Officers for scheduling and organizing this event. Not only did raise money for our new playground equipment, but it brought our community together for fun family event.

We are already scheduling next year's rematch!

Seylar Faculty Gives Back!

As a way to give back to our community, our staff participates in a Casual for Cause event twice a month on Fridays. During these days, staff members are permitted to wear jeans after donating a specified monetary amount. This year our monies have been donated to the following causes:

5th Grade Community Service Project

The students in Mrs. Jones' classroom delivered baskets full of household and baby supplies to Manna on the Main. Manna on Main Street is committed to ending hunger in the North Penn region by providing food, fulfilling social service and education needs, and conducting community outreach. Kudos Mrs. Jones' Fifth Graders!

5th Grade Book Trailers from Mrs. Mulloy's Library

Book Trailers are a great media for sharing books and book talks, and our 5th Graders made their own. These are a few of the favorite books in our Seylar library that 5th graders in Mrs. Groff's classroom created.

Garden Club Refreshens Up Our School Grounds

Every fall and spring, students in fourth and fifth grade have the opportunity to participate in our Garden Club. Our parent coordinator, Mrs. Melissa Nichols, along with a many parent volunteers donate their time to organize and supervise the students in the club (while getting their hands dirty).

Career Day - A Message from Mrs. Kunakorn

Friday, May 29 is Career Day at Seylar. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will participate by moving to various locations throughout the building to hear four 20 minute presentations about a variety of careers. Move-Up Day

In an effort to reduce student anxiety over classroom assignments for the new school year, our school will have a "Move Up Day" activity. On June 17, students will have an opportunity to move up to next year’s grade level to meet a teacher on that team. During this hour visit, teachers will do an activity with the children to begin developing a "classroom" identity and discuss exciting plans and projects for the new school year. This activity is not to be confused with your child’s teacher assignment that is communicated in August.

Dress Code Reminder

With warmer days ahead, I like to remind our parents and students about the proper dress code attire for Pennridge School District elementary school students. Please see below.

Bingo Fun!

Thank you Candice King for organizing our Family Bingo Night this school year. As you can see by the pictures below, many of families took advantage of the evening having lots of fun and winning basket prizes.

New State Mandated Clearances and Field Trip Chaperones/New Volunteers

There have been many questions swirling around the clearance requirements for volunteers during the remainder of the school year. If you are not already a classroom volunteer, and anticipate chaperoning one of our trips, you must submit the necessary clearances described in the District issued memo as required by a new state law. Submitting the clearances enables you to chaperone a field trip, but does not guarantee you will be selected to chaperone.

STEM Summer Camp

This summer Pennridge students entering grades one through six will have the opportunity to attend an enrichment day camp designed for students to explore STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering and math) via hands-on, creative problem solving activities. The activities are real-world challenges that promote critical thinking and communication skills. Students can enroll in a one week or a two week program (weeks of July 20th and 27th). The camp will be held at North Middle School from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday.

Registration is $220 per week if paid before 3/20/2015, or $245 per week if paid after this date. Registration information will be coming out shortly. If you have any questions prior to receiving the registration information, please contact Joan Kulesza, K-8 STEM Supervisor, at 215-453-2343.

From the Nurse's Office

  • This is the time of the year when you need to start checking your child’s skin and hair routinely for ticks, especially if he/she has been in the woods.
  • If a tick has attached itself to your child, remove the tick carefully with a pair of tweezers. If any mouth parts are left in the skin, you will need to contact your family physician.
  • Ticks can cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. Rocky Mountain spotted fever is transmitted common wood tick and causes a systemic, febrile illness. It is seen more commonly in the southern and western states.
  • Lyme disease is more common to our area and is caused by the deer tick. Symptoms generally include a rash that may be accompanied by fever, fatigue, headache, and a stiff neck.
  • Recurrent arthritis in the large joints occurs in the later stages of the disease and may eventually involve the central nervous system and the heart. Lyme disease can be diagnosed by a blood test and is treated with a course of antibiotics.
  • Dentals and physicals are due by the end of the school year- please send them in ASAP!
