El Dorado Monday Memo
Week 13 November 11th, 2019
#ToroFamily
Hey everyone, I hope you all had a great 3 day weekend! As we head into the next couple weeks before Thanksgiving Break, it would be good to revisit some of our #First21Days slides to remind students of our expectations or in the words of Grace Dearborn, "polish the tracks" for our instruction. A few teachers noted last week that they went back and reviewed all those slides where they saw student behaviors increasing. (ie: saw more headphones, went to headphone slide) and it had a real positive impact. Please go over all of the Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible slides this week, as well as any others you feel, are needed. Cell phones might be a good one to review and remind students ONLY before and after school is allowed. But please feel free to cover more. You can find the slidedeck here.
Just another reminder that we want to continue getting to know our students and building relationships with ALL students. You can view and add to our EDMS Student Body Relationships spreadsheet as we will continue to revisit this throughout the year.
Have a great week!

Counselor's Corner...
As we continue to explore our monthly theme "Be Thankful", let's reflect on wants vs needs
A Want: something that is desired, but not necessary to live. You want it because you think it will make you happier...i.e. the latest iPhone, the newest sneakers, candy, etc...
A Need: something required for you to be able to survive and function in your day-to-day life. i.e food, a place to live, clothes to wear, etc.
A lot of times we have everything we NEED....even if we may not have everything we WANT.
Click here for a few worksheets you can use to help students identify needs vs. wants.
Students can focus on their needs and express thanks and gratitude that their daily needs a being met, even if they don't have everything they want.
Julie and Kari, EDMS Counselors
This Week in AVID...
This Week in AVID - November 11, 2019
Socratic Seminar is an engaging way to develop a deeper understanding of complex ideas through meaningful dialogue. It is scaffolded through academic language scripts. We are using the Constructing Meaning Discussion Cards, which illustrates how well AVID and CM compliment each other. Here is the elementary version of Socratic Seminar to get you started which can also be used in secondary classrooms.
