Is Graffiti Art? Or Vandalism?
Graffiti pops up boldly through out our city's. It can make statements about our identity, art, empowerment and politics. While simultaneously being associated with destruction. But it's nothing new. Graffiti or the act of writing or scribbling on public property has been around for thousands of years. In the first century Bce Romans regularly inscribed messages on public walls. Oceans away myans were scratching drawings on to their surfaces. It wasn't always a sub verse of act. In Pompeii ordinary citizens regularly marked public walls. A guy named Plutarch pushed back and deemed graffiti pointless. It wasn't until the 5 century the roots of the modern concept of vandalism planted. Although graffiti is linked with destruction its also a medium of unrestricted artistic expression. Today the debate about the boundary of defacing and beautifying continues. Graffiti brings these questions of ownership, art and acceptability.
