Delran High School Broadcast
December 3, 2021
DELRAN HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
Delran High School, an inclusive learning community, provides educational opportunities for intellectual development while valuing the importance of cultural diversity and tradition.
A Message from Mr. Finkle!
Hello there DHS Community!
I hope that this broadcast finds everyone doing well and that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. As long as each day seems, I can't believe that it is already December!
As we enter the winter months, the spread of Covid-19 seems to increase as activities are moved indoors. It behooves us to take extra care in washing our hands and keeping safe. If your child is not feeling well, please do not send him/her/them to school! Please contact Mrs. Bowman at x3011 or fbowman@delranschoools.org with any questions. In addition, the testing center for Burlington County has moved again. It is now located at 4390 Route 130 North, right around the Taco Bell in Willingboro. Please see below for their flyer. The last thing that we wish to see is an increase in positive cases within the Delran community. Thank you for your attention to this!
I would like to call to your attention some events that will occur before the holiday break. Our Choirs will hold their concert on Thursday, December 9th at 7:00 pm in the PAC. I look forward to again enjoying live music from our talented students. The following week, on December 16th at 7:00 pm, the band will present their winter concert.
On December 14th, Progress reports will be available through the Parent Portal. We will also be sending them home via US Mail shortly thereafter. Also included in the mailing will be your child's Start Strong standardized testing results. A letter will accompany the results to explain how to interpret. Should you have any questions about the results, please contact your child's guidance counselor.
The Delran High School parking lot is a constant battle for us as we keep our students safe. Please keep in mind as the weather worsens during the winter, we will inevitably see more traffic during our morning arrivals. Our school was built in the 1970s and has so many advantages that we are proud and grateful for. Unfortunately, the traffic and pedestrian patterns were not one of those advantages. We have over one thousand persons here at DHS each and every day. We have a designated student drop-off location within the two lanes nearest our main office vestibule. We welcome all students to school as early as 6:45 am and provide free breakfast. The campus becomes saturated with traffic after 7:20 am. There are several things we can do collectively until we are able to change the pattern which we plan to do in the near future:
Carpool - work with neighbors to devise a plan in order to split the driving. Fewer cars on campus help our cause.
Students on this side of Route 130 and within reasonable distances from school can walk or ride their bikes. Some studies indicate that exercise at the start of the day is advantageous to increase academic performance in school.
Students eligible for busing can take advantage and ride the bus.
Leave 5 - 10 minutes earlier. It is already an early start but arriving earlier before 7:20 will dramatically reduce the congestion and your wait time.
Drop off ONLY at the drop-off zone. Once you turn to the back of the building, you can drop off any place along the sidewalk. Dropping off any other place will put your child and others at risk.
We appreciate your effort to keep our students and campus safe.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at dfinkle@delranschools.org or (856) 461-6100 x3005.

Chemistry News
Mr. Smith's and Mrs. Mason's CP and Honors Chemistry classes just finished up their mock science fair poster projects on Nuclear Chemistry. (No parents, we do not let them play with Uranium!) The students had a wide variety of topics to choose from, from Medical to Power Plants. However, a disproportionate number of them chose Nuclear Bombs. When questioned why that choice, they said they had just finished studying World War II in their History classes and wanted to know more about the science behind these two bombs. Also, they thought the names "Fatman" and "Littleboy" were amusing, and many of them also spent time discussing the ethical and moral dilemmas of producing and using these devices. So it turned out to be a very inter-curricular project. And they did very well on their projects. Some of them even included cartoon figures to go along with the funny names. A few did do medical-related projects which you could tell were Cancer interest-related.

Adopt-A-Family for the Holiday Season
The Business Department, Freshman Seminar Classes, and Transition Project-Peer Leaders are in the process of organizing our Annual Adopt-A-Family program. This program is in its 12th year and has served an average of 20+ families each year with the help of many teams, clubs, and staff members from DHS. If you are aware of a local family in need this holiday season or are interested in donating to this program, please contact Mr. Marter at nmarter@delranschools.org
Investing Club - New this year!
Seniors Jason Corcoran and Alex Stanuikynas have started a new club here at DHS called the Investing Club. The club meets every other Monday and has a Canvas page dedicated to what topics will be discussed at the meetings. Students have learned about different investing and financial terms, have been encouraged to start investing on their own and can view multiple videos to better understand what investing is and how it works. At the meetings, Jason and Alex show the members how to read stock information and what companies they should be watching. The club is brand new and we already have well over 20 members that attend the meetings. If you are interested in joining please see either Jason Corcoran, Alex Stanuikynas, or Mrs. Schmidt.

Financial Aid
Financial Aid Night was held on November 18th. The Director of Financial Aid at TCNJ presented beneficial information pertaining to the types of financial aid, the application process, and the financial aid package. Please see the Guidance webpage to view the Power Point presentation.
Scholarship Opportunities
Many new scholarship opportunities are being posted on the Guidance webpage. Check back often as we make updates as information is received. Although many scholarships are exclusive to seniors, there are quite a few that accept applications from underclassmen.
For the most part, these scholarships are offered each year, so it’s a good idea for underclassmen to check out what is being offered and begin a “scholarship portfolio”. They can prepare the applications/essays, view the criteria, and think about letters of recommendation they may need.
No grades, test scores, or essays. The Live Más Scholarship is for students who are pursuing higher education, preparing for the workforce, or using their passion to ignite change in their communities and beyond. Submit a two-minute video telling us what you’re passionate about and how you plan to make a difference. The deadline is January 11, 2022.

All students in 10th through 12th grades have an account, please see the Guidance Department Website for additional information.
ATHLETIC NEWS
Mr. Guidotti's Update
We, like many other districts, are continuing to struggle with transportation for students and extracurricular activities due to a bus driver shortage. To combat this, we have changed game schedules and game times. We do, however, anticipate that there will be days that there just are no buses available. The Delran Township BOE has a Transportation by Private Vehicle policy (Policy 8660) in place for situations that may occur. In addition, the BOE along with the Superintendent has developed a permission process that would allow a driver of a student to carpool with other students in the event that a parent/guardian is unable to take their child to a board-approved activity. HERE is a permission form for parents who are able to transport their child to/from away sporting events. HERE is a permission form for parents who are unable to provide transportation, but agree to have their child transported by another parent. Students who drive are able to drive to the contest; however, they MAY NOT transport a teammate. In order for our students to get the most out of this school year, we must work together to develop solutions. Thank you so much for your support, patience, and understanding during these times of uncertainty.
We have been asked questions about our canine friends and whether they are allowed to attend home events. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Dogs are not allowed on district property at any time as we will not take on the liability. Please leave your dogs at home when you attend our events. Thank you very much!
The fitness center will be open Monday through Thursday from 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm. A fitness center permission form must be filled out and dropped off at the main office before permission is granted. The form can be found here. At this time, masks must be worn while using the fitness center.
Registration for DHS Unified Bowling is up and running. The first practice is on December 9th. If you are interested in being a part of this amazing program, please contact Joe Lewis at jlewis@delranschools.org. The registration link for this program is here.
Delran High School Winter sports will be back at DHS this year. Delran High School has the pixellot system from NFHS for live streaming events. It is a subscription service. $10.99 per month gives you access to all home events including wrestling, boys basketball, and girls basketball. In addition, you will have access to any away teams that also use the NFHS pixellot system like Moorestown and Pennsauken when the Bears play there. The link to order your subscription is https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/schools/delran-high-school-delran-nj
The Delran Bowling team has started off the season strong with a sweep of STEM Civics at Laurel Lanes. Their next bowling match will be this Friday, December 3rd at Bristol Pike Lanes against Doane Academy.
The Delran Swim is working hard in the pool late at night and is ready to show their division that they will be considered in the running for a championship. Their first meet is this Saturday, December 4th vs Sterling at Camden County Tech-Sicklerville Campus.
The Delran Boys and Girls Basketball teams begin scrimmages next week. The first scrimmages are on Tuesday, December 7th. The Girls will travel to Robbinsville while the Boys will host Robbinsville.
The Delran Wrestling team is looking forward to getting on the mat against some opponents. They are conditioning and the season looks promising. The Bears will be going to Lenape on 12/11 for team practice. Their first season competition will take place on December 18th at a tournament at Hammonton High School. The girls are entered into a tournament at Pennsauken High School on December 19th.
