The Compass
Week of April 3, 2023
Navigation Notes
Happy April Westside Families! We are continuing our amazing Grand Land Adventure fundraiser this week with our big Fun Run event on Wednesday. Our school has earned $13,500 thus far, but only have 41% of our school registered and only 25% have pledged or donated. If you have not registered your child as of yet, go to MyBooster.com today! It's FREE with no obligations and if you get just one pledge or donation, it will truly add up for our school.
Since we have hit the $5,000 mark AND the $10,000 mark, the students have earned a CRAZY HAT/HAIR day on Tuesday and PAJAMA Day on Thursday!
On Wednesday, we will be celebrating our fundraising efforts with a schoolwide Fun Run Event! Students will need to wear athletic clothing, sneakers and bring a water bottle. Hats and sunglasses are also encouraged. Each grade level will have a one-hour block to run, dance, and celebrate with the Boosterthon Team and our staff. Fifth and Sixth graders have earned a COLOR RUN, so they can wear light-colored shirts. They WILL get dirty if they choose to go through the color stations, so be sure they are dressed in something that is able to get dirty including shoes! It is fully washable and non-toxic, but they will come home looking like they rolled in chalk :)
Reminder, there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 7th. School will resume Monday, April 10th.
As always, thank you for your support! Our office will be open Monday-Thursday this week from 7:30AM-3:30PM. Please come on in if we can assist you in any way.

We Need Your Voice!
Our last SAC Meeting will be May 1st at 3:00pm. The purpose of the School Advisory Council is to be a community stakeholder voice to provide feedback and recommendations, help develop school initiatives, and guide our School Improvement Plan.
You do not have to be a registered volunteer to attend any meeting, simply check in at the front office with your photo ID.
For more information on our agendas and purpose, please contact Beth McKinney at McKinney.Beth@Brevardschools.org
Why Volunteer
Do you want to attend upcoming field trips with your child? Help out in your child's classroom? Participate in class parties or special events? Help support our school with hours or donations? Then become a BPS Volunteer!
If you are interested in being a registered volunteer this school year, please visit the District website located HERE. Currently, it is FREE to have your fingerprinting and background checks completed, so don't delay! Our BPS safety protocols require any adult on campus during school hours must be a registered volunteer.
Friday is Family Lunch Day!
We had a good turnout for our Parent/Student Lunch Day last Friday! Thank you to the families who joined us and we look forward to seeing more of you this Friday.
At this time, we must follow the parameters listed below per BPS guidelines:
- This opportunity will only be available on Fridays.
- Only adults on the approved pick-up list for a child will be allowed to have lunch with students. You will need to present your photo ID at the front office and receive a visitor's tag. When done, you must sign out before leaving campus.
- A designated area will be provided for the adult and student.
- Adults will only be allowed to eat lunch with THEIR child and we request only two adults per child please.
- Adults who are not registered volunteers will be monitored by school staff at all times.
- Adults will be permitted to be on campus for lunch for their child's 30-minute lunch block (times listed at end of newsletter for all classes). Once your child's lunch is over, we kindly as you to sign out and exit campus. If you have multiple children and want to have lunch with all of them, you must wait for additional lunch times in the front office, glass booth, or your vehicle.
- You may bring in food from outside sources for your child only. Any leftover drinks or snacks will not be allowed back in class however.
Wireless Communication Device Policy
We are asking parents to review the BPS Wireless Communication Device policy (po5136) and the Cell Phone Contract which are attached to the end of this newsletter. It will also be posted on our school website and social media forums. You can also access po5136 at the BPS link HERE.
If your child has obtained a wireless communication device such as a smartphone since registration in August 2022, you will be asked to complete a Cell Phone Contract for this device. This week, we will be identifying those students who need updated contracts and send them home to you. Please feel free to reach out to our office for a copy as well. As a reminder, Westside Elementary's procedures are that cell phones are to be powered off and in backpacks while on school grounds unless permission has been given by an administrator. Students who violate the WCD policy may receive disciplinary action. Reminder: if a student needs to contact home we will provide access, or if you need to speak to your child, please call the front office and we will connect you.
