3rd Grade's a HOOT!

February 16 - 19, 2016

3rd Grade Update

This Friday we will be going on our field trip to The Battle of Aiken. We will be leaving the school around 8 and returning around 1:30. Please don't be late. It is important that students wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a jacket. The majority of this trip will be outside. If students signed up to bring their lunch from home, it will be important that they bring both their lunch and a drink. It will be an exciting day and I hope everyone will behave and enjoy this opportunity to learn about a battle from the Civil War. If you are interested in learning more about this you can visit http://www.battleofaiken.org/ .

Reading

We are currently reading aloud Peter Pan. Students are keeping a readers notebook for this novel study. This will be collected at the end of part one for a grade. Students will be given a checklist to make sure they have the necessary components before turning in their journal.

Current Skill Focus - Comparing and contrasting two texts, Venn diagrams, asking and answering questions, showing evidence from a text to support our answer

Writing - This week we will be writing our opinion about our classroom performance so far this 9 weeks. Student generated interim reports will be sent home next week.

Encourage your child to complete their independent reading each night.

Math

In Chapter 7 we will be looking at patterns in multiplication and division. We will expand on what we have already learned to look at some more difficult work and fact extensions.

Timed multiplication test focus: 10-11s

Next week: 10-11s (continued)

Keep practicing facts!

Science

We will be learning about force and motion. We will talk about how it takes a force to put and object in motion and that an object in motion stays in motion until another force causes the object to stop. We will have a test next Tuesday, February 23. A study guide will go home this week.

SC History

Now that the colonies have successfully gained their freedom from England during the American Revolution, it is time to establish a government. In Chapter 6 students will learn about how our government was established and why it was important. We will have a test next Thursday, February 25. Students will get a study guide this week.

Other Notes

Don't forget to check and sign your child's agenda each night. Encourage them to write neatly so you can read what they should be doing. Every child should be able to communicate what they are doing in class.

Purple folders come home on Wednesday. Please make sure you are reviewing the papers and signing the folder each week. The folders are due back to school by Friday.
