The Pez Press

Week of November 15th

A Note from Mr.Pez

West Maple Families,

I would like to start out by thanking all of our West Maple families who donated to our Food Drive put on by the 4th and 5th grade Peacemakers. This weekend over 100 meals were delivered and distributed by Peanut Butter and Jelly group with the help of some of our West Maple families. Thank you to Mrs. Delgado, Mr. Mitevski, and Mrs. Piscitelli for helping our students to stock the bags. Many thanks to our West Maple staff also for helping to load the truck at the end of the day on Friday. What a wonderful way for us to give thanks and support our local community as we approach Thanksgiving.

Today is the release of report cards in Power School , and Fall Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. Our West Maple teachers and staff look forward to meeting with parents, and thank you in advance for your time, and also adjusting your schedules with half days on both Wednesday and Thursday. Conferences are a great time to positively connect with the teachers and support staff that work daily to provide supportive teaching and learning environments for your children.

For all students and their families the book fair will be open on both Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00 P.M.4:00 and 5:00- 8:00 P.M. Be sure to stop on in and support our library and your child's reading excitement by getting a new book!

For those students wishing to participate in Reflections there will be a final free, afterschool workshop for you to work on your projects. Your child must come with the materials they need to work on their project and must be signed up here: https://tinyurl.com/3fkffz2a. The last date is Tuesday 11/16 3:50-5:15pm in the media center.

Thanks for all you do,

Mr. Pez

FALL BOOK FAIR

Wednesday and Thursday During Conferences

1:00 PM to 8:00 PM

West Maple School Library

Build your home reading libraries by shopping at our school book fair during conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. Book fail flyers will be sent home Friday, November 12. Students will preview the book fair on Monday and Tuesday to create a wish list of titles they are interested in. You can use the wish list to help you shop on Wednesday and Thursday.

Alternatively, students may bring money from home to shop during the school day as their teacher allows Tuesday 11/16 -Thursday 11/18. Please have any money sent in an envelope with your signature across the seal so we can be sure you gave permission for your student to shop.

All proceeds are used to continue building our library collection to meet our school communities needs with current, relevant, and interesting books and resources.

If you are able to volunteer to help set up/tear down the book fair or to assist students making a wish list, please sign up below.

BPS eNews Upgrade

eNews Upgrade

Beginning Nov. 29, BPS will shift to an upgraded eNews system. No changes will be noticeable to parents/guardians and email recipients, however the upgrade provides the District with flexibility in managing various groups and messages. While the system automatically links parents/guardians to their child(ren)’s school, anyone interested in joining other school eNews messages from schools not associated with their child(ren) should sign up at https://birmingham.parentlink.net/main/login/new-account-sign-up. For more information on eNews, visit www.birmingham.k12.mi.us/enews.

WEST MAPLE STORY WALK

West Maple has a new literacy feature called a Story Walk. The Story Walk features a new picture book that students can explore by reading the pages and observing the pictures. This month our book is Lunch Every Day by Kathryn Otoshi. The featured book centers on West Maple's touch stone character traits: Kindness, Empathy, Integrity and Responsibility. The Story Walk begins at the Southeast corner of the library square and wraps around the entire square ending near the computer labs.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS (4TH-5TH)

Battle of the Books in cooperation with Baldwin Public Library will kick off at West Maple on December 6, 2021. Families can pre-order a book bundle with all six titles for your 4th or 5th grade student, please complete the linked form and return the form and check (payable to West Maple) by Friday, November 5. Students who order a bundle with receive the bundle following the assembly on introducing this year’s titles on December 6.

Book Bundle Form

For those new to the Battle of the Books, students form teams of four to six students and recruit a parent/adult to coach their team. Teams can be made up of any student of Birmingham Public Schools and students living in Birmingham which means teammates do not have to attend the same school. The students will read the six battle books between December 6 and March 5. On March 5 students will assemble with their teams and zoom into the Virtual Battle where they will answer questions about the books they read.

Coaches are responsible for registering the team and facilitating team meetings. Teams will come up with a unique team name and on the Battle day often wear costumes or team shirts representing their team name.

Baldwin Public Library facilitates the registration of the teams, host's coaches meetings, host's book clubs for each title, and facilitates the entire Battle on March 5. Students who want to participate in the battle, but are struggling to find a team can fill out a "needs a team" form during the registration window and Baldwin will manage connecting those students with a team open to accepting members.

Important Battle Dates:

Kick-Off: Monday, December 6

Team Registration Begins: Monday, February 7

Team Registration Closes: Friday, February 25

Virtual Battle: Saturday, March 5 at 11 AM
