HES Shark Scoop
April 28, 2023
From Dr. Cutone
Dear HES Families,
Welcome back! We were all so excited to see your children on Monday, and what a great week it has been! Thank you for sending your children back to us for the final eight weeks of the school year.
This week, April’s 4th grade ambassadors led the school in a beautiful assembly, which focused on our core value of respect. They performed short skits and challenged the whole school to respect our earth by taking efforts to clean up our campus. A celebratory addition to this month’s meeting spotlighted students, Hadley Dutcher and Emily Goodnow, who shared their award-winning poems from the Cape Cod Voices for Peace Poetry Contest.
As this week wraps up Autism Appreciation Month, the whole school enjoyed Mr. Weimer’s Blue 7-Up and Mentos Geysers activity and Ms. Hoff’s Robot Parade through our hallways. These wonderful traditions brought lots of joy and excitement for the whole school.
Thank you for making your optional class placement requests. The form is officially closed, and now it’s time for the educators to do their part in ensuring all children are set up for success next year. Thank you for trusting us as we move forward with this process; details about Step Up Day are forthcoming.
In May, MCAS continues for our upper elementary students, and many end of year events are on the docket! Please keep eyes out for grade specific activities, and know that larger school wide events will be shared here. Next week is Massachusetts Walk, Bike, Roll to School on Wednesday, May 3rd. Being sidewalk challenged in Harwich, we will conduct our school-wide walk during the school day.
As a reminder, the Harwich Town Meeting will be May 1, 2023 (with Town Elections May 16, 2023). Childcare for Town Meeting is offered through the Recreation Department.
Have a great weekend and enjoy all that is spring.
My best,
Christie
Meu melhor, Christie

Autism Is....?
In this book for autistic children, Logan overhears his grandma telling her friend he has autism, and asks her, ”Autism is...?” She explains what autism is to him in this beautifully illustrated story. Children with autism face many challenges and they are often aware of and question their autism.

This is the story of Zane, a zebra with autism, who worries that his differences make him stand out from his peers. With careful guidance from his mother, Zane learns that autism is only one of many qualities that make him special.
