Welcome Ms Kelly!
A note from Ms. Kelly:
Dear students and parents of Fulton Science Academy Private School,
I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Lindsay Kelly and I am honored to be your new school counselor. School counselors assist all students with their academic, social and personal performance to be successful in school; and to prepare them for life beyond their school years. That means that I am here for YOU; to help you be the best student that you can be, to help you develop into a trustworthy and caring friend, and to explore your interests and talents that will one day lead to a future career.
We will work together throughout the school year individually, in small groups, and in classroom guidance lessons. Classroom guidance lessons will encourage positive core values and traits including, but not limited to fairness, responsibility, citizenship, trustworthiness, caring, and respectfulness. I have extensive knowledge of the college planning and application process and will work one on one with each student assisting you throughout your journey.
Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, I will work with the school staff and parents to create a caring climate and atmosphere and provide education, prevention, early identification and intervention to help all students achieve academic success.
I am looking forward to offering support to the students, staff and families of the Fulton Science Academy Private School. We will have many wonderful experiences and opportunities to learn and grow in the days ahead. I believe that communication is the key to a great parent- counselor relationship so please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Miss Lindsay Kelly, M.S.Ed.

STATE HIGH SCHOOL MATH TOURNAMENT WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Macon, GA – A team of four students from Fulton Science Academy in Alpharetta won the non-GHSA (Independent) School division championship in the 40th annual state mathematics tournament on Saturday, April 30, in Macon. Team members Andre Hamelberg, Tyler Hecht, Vishaal Ram, and Charlie Furniss (photo, L to R) were coached by Fulton Science Academy mathematics teacher Sema Duzyol.
At the state competition, competitors individually complete a 50-question multiple-choice test and a speed round followed by teams working together to complete a set of a dozen challenging problems. The questions come from topics included in the standard high school curriculum up to and including calculus, as well as topics not traditionally found in the curriculum, such as number theory and combinatorics.
The Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCTM) sponsors the annual state math championship. Schools are invited to send four of their best math team students to compete. Schools earn an invitation to the state math tournament based on their performance at other tournaments throughout the state. Schools from all Georgia High School Association (GHSA) classifications as well as non-GHSA schools compete together.
“We make every effort to invite the schools with the best math teams in Georgia so that this is truly a battle of champions,” says Tournament Director and GCTM Vice-President of Competitions, Dr. Chuck Garner.
The tournament was held at the Middle Georgia State University (MGSU) Conference Center in Macon. GCTM, MGSU, and AT&T of Georgia sponsored the event. Mu Alpha Theta, the national mathematics honor society, made cash prizes available to the top three individual winners.
At the conclusion of the state tournament, the students selected for the All-State Math Team are announced. This team will represent the state of Georgia at the nation-wide American Regions Math League (ARML) tournament on June 4.
For more information, contact Dr. Chuck Garner, VP for Competitions for GCTM, at cgarner@gctm.org.

A Special Visitor for Elementary Science Olympiad
On Monday, April 25th our Weather or Not and Meteorology Science Olympiad students had the pleasure of hosting a meteorologist from The Weather Channel during their Science Olympiad coaching sessions. Briana Gordon, a local meteorologist, spoke to our students about her job and the weather/meteorology topics our students are studying! It was a great way for our students to see their knowledge and how it pertains to our everyday lives.
Global Awareness Assembly
On Thursday, April 28, FSA's fourth through eighth grade students had the honor of hosting Peace Corps. volunteer G. Morgan Timmis, who talked about her time working at an elementary school in Botswana. Ms. Timmis talked about how she decided to join the Peace Corps, flying to Botswana, and meeting her initial host family. She and the other volunteers spent several weeks of rigorous training, including three hours daily of studying the local language! Once training was completed, Ms. Timmis moved into her designated living area, a small village called Hatsalatladi, with a population of approximately 1,00-1,500 residents (plus many cows, goats, donkeys, and chickens)!
Ms. Timmis works as a school counselor at Hatsalatladi Primary School, where she helps students learn about and make appropriate and healthy life-choice decisions. Her personal goal is to build and stock a library for the school, and she has been reaching out to different organizations in an effort to make that happen. FSAPS will be partnering with Hatsalatladi Primary School, so that our wonderful students and families will be able to help their students, such as by donating much-needed school supplies and resources.
Thank you Ms. Timmis for your wonderful presentation, and for sharing your experience with us!
Robotics Presentation
In January 2004, two robotic geologists named Spirit and Opportunity landed on opposite sides of the red planet. With far greater mobility than the 1997 Mars Pathfinder rover, these robotic explorers have trekked for miles across the Martian surface, conducting field geology and making atmospheric observations carrying identical, sophisticated sets of science instruments.
One of our parents Shiela DeLa Pena was in the team who designed Spirit and Opportunity arms and cameras. On April 26th, she visited our class and gave a presentation about Spirit's and Opportunity ’s journey to Mars and on Mars, at the end of it she answered all our questions.

Warm Weather Running Tips
• You can lose between 6 and 12 ounces of fluid for every 20 minutes of running. Hydrate before you run, while you run, and after you run. Drink 10-15 ounces of fluid 10 to 15 minutes prior to running and every 20 to 30 minutes along your route.
• Run in the shade if possible to avoid direct sun. If exposed to the sun, apply at least spf 45 sunscreen. Wear sunglasses and/or wear a hat with a visor to shade your eyes and face.
• Run with a partner and/or a parent. You shouldn’t run alone, but if you do, carry identification, or write your name, phone number, and any important medical information on the inside sole of your running shoe. Make sure someone knows the route you will be running.
• Pay very close attention to the path or course. If you are supposed to wear glasses, by all means, wear them! So many runners are injured unnecessarily in this way.
• Remember to double or even triple tie your running shoes. This will prevent trips and falls.

FSA Health Policy Reminder
It seems that cold and flu season is upon us and in full swing. We would like to remind you of our school policy regarding communicable illnesses and give you some helpful tips for staying healthy. We are beginning to see a lot of students at the front office with communicable illnesses and many of them mention that they were sick before leaving home, but their parents encouraged them to come to school. Please let me remind you that control measures and periods of exclusion are very important at a time like this in order to keep down the spread of these illnesses.
If we all follow these guidelines and simple steps, it will help to combat the spread of illness throughout our school and in your homes.
School guidelines regarding communicable illness:
1. The student should remain at home until being symptom free for 24 hours. This means that your child may not return to school until 24 hours from their last vomiting or diarrhea episode.
2. If the student experiences a fever during an illness, they should be “fever free” for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication before returning to school.
3. If the diagnosis is strep throat, the student should remain at home for 24 hours after starting the first dose of antibiotic treatment.
4. During any communicable illness, the student should be symptom free and fever free for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child has the flu, they should provide a doctor's note stating they can return to school.
IMPORTANT DISMISSAL PROCEDURES ANNOUNCEMENT
For the safety of our students:
School dismissal policy is that at 3:30 pm and 4:20 pm students are dismissed by carpool at the upper circle. Unless there is a family emergency, please do not expect to get your student from the front desk. If there is a family emergency please call the Administration Team, Principal Sener, or Assistant Principals Turan and Campbell, who will authorize pick up of your child during our no pick up times.
Any students waiting in the lobby without a parent will be sent up to Study Hall between 3:30 pm and 4:20 pm to be supervised, and from 4:40 pm -6 pm to After Care.
School closes at 6 pm, any students remaining will be under the care of staff waiting to go home.
If a parent is coaching a club or at a parent conference siblings or carpooling students need to be in Study Hall or After Care (no fee incurred).
If one student is in a club, or private music lesson, any additional siblings will be expected to follow the rule above (fee will apply after 4:40).
Academic Team members need to be picked up at 5:30 pm (unless otherwise directed by teachers). If not picked up they will be sent to After Care and the fee applied.
Pre-k and Kindergarten students (and any siblings or carpooling students) will continue to dismiss from the end of the elementary hallway.
Teachers ‘children need to use Study Hall or After Care unless directly supervised by their parent.
No student should ever be in an area of our school without adult supervision, cafeteria, stage, gym etc
Please respect our teachers and parent coach’s personal time as they work outside regular school hours with your students by picking up promptly.
This is our school policy and it will be adhered to.

A reminder that all non-uniform jackets need to be taken off and left in lockers or cubbies after arriving at school. Jackets should be worn for outside recess, but must be returned to lockers or cubbies after that. Wearing a non-uniform jacket during class is a violation of the dress code, which results in conduct points.
All students 4th through 8th grade have been issued a locker lock for their locker. This locker lock is to be used to prevent anyone from tampering with student belongings. If you have lost your locker lock, see Mrs. Campbell for a replacement. A replacement lock will cost $20.
