The Home-School Connection
On Lockers & Learning
Hello Families.
Lockers are opening more easily...
Cafeteria lines are moving more efficiently...
And students are moving from class to class with greater certainty and confidence.
Yes, the third week of school is behind us! And what a great start it has been!
Thank you for helping make this a successful launch. Your children have demonstrated great respect for our school's goals and their willingness to demonstrate responsible and safe behaviors has created an environment where learning is maximized.
As you review our newsletter, please be reminded of the many ways that we continue to stay in touch. Your support is so critical to the success of your children and our school, so we ask that you reach out to us if we can be of any greater assistance.

Humans of Island Trees Memorial Middle School
Mrs. Gustafson
"I began my career with 5 years of various elementary teaching positions, but 17 years ago I found myself teaching math here at Island Trees. From the first weeks I knew this was home. In Island Trees I have taught students in every grade level from 5th to 12th and loved them all, especially when my students join me in geeking out over some random mathematical fun.
Outside of school I have traveled to Ireland, Costa Rica, Alaska, throughout Europe and even attended the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Also, I have performed in over 50 community and children's theater productions here on Long Island, playing characters from the Mother Superior in The Sound of Music to the Front End of a Cow in Jack and the Bean Stalk.
Most importantly, just under a year ago I became Mom to my mini me, Eliza. She has magically changed my perspective on life and my interactions with my students."

It's Happening in Our Classrooms
If you are like me, you probably ask your children, "How was school today?" Though I don't have middle schoolers just yet, the typical response I am met with is, "Good." This begins a series of follow-ups aimed at getting some more information. Incidentally, Scholastic has developed a list of ten questions to ask your children about their day.
This section has been designed to shed additional light on some of the events and activities from our classrooms and assist all of you as you continue to inquire, "How was your school day?"
Additionally, now that all of our students have a Chromebook, you are certain to see and hear of apps, websites, and teaching models which, at first glance, may not seem familiar to you. I will try to use this section to communicate the role of these new applications and methods.
Owl Pellet Investigation
Mr. Flynn's 6th grade classroom took part in an owl pellet investigation, which was designed to build in each student an appreciation for scientific processes and skills. Students made predictions, analyzed data, and drew evidence-based conclusions. Watching these young scientists actively engage in this lab reminds me of the power of hands-on, active learning.
Quizlet Live
Quizlet is an application used by many of our teachers to help students solidify their knowledge of the terms, concepts, individuals and groups shaping their curriculum. While this level of study sets a foundation for more critical analysis, Quizlet provides an engaging, fun, and collaborative platform for student to learn together and grow their cooperative skills.
Collaborative Math Investigations
While most of us look back at our own math days and think of rows of desks and individualized practice, our students continue to learn in many formats--including as members of learning teams. A visit to Mrs. McNamara's math class saw student teams working together to master algebraic concepts. These groups worked collaboratively and moved around the room to complete a series of tasks that grew in complexity and demanded teamwork.
