VOL. 4 NO. 5
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
WEEK ENDING IN 9/10/2021
Dear OSES Family Members,
Progress reports are now available for viewing. An email was sent from Ms. Greene, our AP, regarding how to view these reports. No confirmation form needs to be signed, however we will require acknowledgement for all report cards. Parent-teacher conferences are next week and may be scheduled directly with your student’s teacher(s). Conferences may be scheduled throughout the school year via Zoom.
Tomorrow is Patriot Day. Patriot Day offers schools an opportunity to reflect on and learn about the events of September 11th, 2001. Since September 11th falls on a Saturday, OSES encouraged teachers to observe Patriot Day today Friday, September 10th.
I hope each family has adjusted to our drop-off and pick-up process. The challenges of dense traffic during these times is not exclusive to our school and we hope that each driver does their part. Regardless, please be respectful to one another, as we expect our students and children towards one another.
Mr. Singleton, Principal

VIRTUAL PBS KIDS TIME
Hi WUCF Families,
Guess what? It’s almost time for Virtual PBS KIDS Time!
This month we are packing our bags and “flying” with Let’s Go Luna to Catalonia, Spain to learn about teamwork and the Spanish culture along the way!
Our learning goals for this event include exploring cultures and phonemic awareness (blending compound words, initial sounds; rhyme repetition).
Attached is the Family Prep Kit with your passport, boarding pass, and of course instructions on making a document holder to keep them organized for our trip. You’ll also find the gather at-home materials and printables, along with prep ahead instructions.
“Flight dates” require registration via Zoom and “departure” is at 10:00am. You’ll also find the downloadable Family Prep Kit and registration links on wucf.org/familyevents.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten has accomplished so much this week and making great gains in their learning.
We have moved on to learning about living our communities and about each other.
We are so proud of the gains and social skills the students are gaining.
Please don’t forget a face mask, snack and water bottle.
We love the progress o)f all the students and look forward to each day to greet your child with warmth!!:
FIRST
In Social Studies, students are learning about rules and responsibilities they have at home and school.
Cpalms is a great resource to use if you’d like to learn more about our standards and/or have your child work through math tutorials for practice.

Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up September 14th. You will receive more information from your child's teacher soon.
Thank you for your continued support! Have a great weekend!
First Grade Teachers
Mrs. Yeaman, Ms. DiNuzzo, Ms. Terentev, Ms. Di Re, Mrs. Stanley, Ms. Placencia
SECOND
In Math, to review rounding, addition and subtraction, students had to solve problems in an Emoji Town Escape Room! So far, one team has escaped after solving the 5 challenges.
THIRD
FOURTH
Fourth grade is hard at work in every subject. In math, we are tackling multi-step word problems that help us sharpen our math skills and ground us to the real world. In science, we are completing hands on activities such as identifying properties of metal and scouring the class in search of metals using magnets. As a reminder, progress reports are available on OSES connect this Friday and teachers may reach out soon to set up parent-teacher conferences for next week.
Thank you to all our fourth-grade families who have sent in donations. We are always accepting and grateful of any supplies.
FIFTH
SIXTH
In Ms. Holihan’s Life Science class students are working hard to learn all the steps in the scientific method! This week students will discuss observations vs inferences and spend time researching credible sources for their science fair topics!
In Mrs. Aramayo’s Explorations in Biology elective, students are growing mangroves for a collaborative shoreline restoration project with UCF’s CEELAB (Coastal and Estuarine Ecology Lab). This week the students planted the mangroves and began to collect the first set of data!
This week in ELA students turned in their mini projects for the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and “The Jacket” by Gary Soto. Students in period one through three read “All Summer in a Day” and examined that character of Margot and determined which points were essential to the plot. In periods four and five, students read “The Jacket” (a memoir) and considered the experience of the narrator/writer and his relationship with a jacket he didn’t want. For the project, students had their choice of writing a second chapter that continued the story/memoir, making a diorama of a scene from the story, or creating a two-sided book cover. Students shared their projects on Tuesday.
Here are some of the dioramas they made:
For the rest of the week, students will practice reading informational texts and answering questions using the R.A.C.E. strategy. With R.A.C.E., students learn to restate the question, answer the question, cite textual evidence, and explain their answer as it relates to the evidence. The R.A.C.E. strategy is useful in all subjects that require students to answer questions using a source. It is also a good jumping off point for later units on writing where students will be required to cite and elaborate on textual evidence.
SPECIALS
In STEM this week we focused on M- Maths. We discussed how shapes, specifically polygons, and geometry help us in STEM. We built shapes from pattern blocks and toothpicks and clay. Kindergarten worked on counting, graphing, and patterns.
This week in Art we are learning about some of the Elements of Art and creating drawings and collages that reflect a basic understanding of them and how to incorporate the elements into a work of art. Kindergarten and 1st grade are making collages that require them to use art tools safely and effectively as well as how to cut shapes.
In Computer Science, K-2nd Graders continued learning how to use a computer keyboard to develop their typing skills. 3rd-5th Graders worked on the F to R keys and did practice by following interactive slides on Nearpod.
