Principal's Message
Dear Falcon Families,
First and foremost -- Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on their Super Bowl VICTORY!!!!!! I am so proud to live in this great city and see such an amazing accomplishment! It is going to be a wonderful memory for ourselves and our children for years to come! I know many teachers were planning on some football-themed lessons today to keep students engaged because it was a late night for many! For those who are headed downtown to the celebration parade on Wednesday, I wish you all the best for safety, parking, and bathrooms!
But the excitement isn't over...February holds its own special activities here at Riverview. We have parent-teacher conferences, classroom Valentine's Day parties, and a book fair next week, and PTA-sponsored free Bingo event the week after that! We are also gearing up for our big Spring Fundraiser, Run for the Roses Parents' Night Out event March 7! This month the Parent Lighthouse Committee is finalizing theme decorations, student artwork, and securing donations for the auction itself! It's a guaranteed good time, and we are hoping to have our largest turnout yet! We hope you will attend, it definitely puts the FUN in FUNdraiser! Our main need right now is for gift card donations...please see below for links to sign up to send in a gift card or two for the event, thank you for your consideration of supporting this event!
Students this month will work on Habit #6 - Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood. In student-friendly language, it means "Listen First, Then Talk." We often refer to this Habit when we are talking about possible conflict or disagreements. If you are upset with someone or a situation, before sharing why you feel that way, you may gain valuable insight by Seeking First to Understand. You may learn more about an individual's reasoning, an organization's policy, or at least being able to hold a conversation to create a space in which the other individual is also more likely to hear you out, leading to a more productive discussion.
Part of Habit #6 can also be applied to basic relationship-building skills, not just when facing a disagreement. If you have a friend or loved one who is upset, sometimes just by practicing empathic listening can be the most supportive way to help. Being a good listener can help build trust and go a long way toward helping someone struggling by feeling heard.
Have a wonderful February!
Sincerely,
Beth Mildren
