GATE Testing March Update
In April, we will be testing eligible fifth grade students and all second grade students. Fifth grade families of eligible students were sent a letter last week with an informational letter and "opt in" form; second grade students will bring home the letter and "opt out" form this month.
Remember that eligibility criteria for fifth grade students requires that they are new to the District or that they scored at/above the 85th percentile on their previous CogAt administration. Per SDUSD Board Policy, however, families of students who didn't qualify for retesting may submit an appeal if extenuating circumstances inhibited their performance on the previous test administration. Please submit the appeal form and documentation to Mrs. Wood (mroy@sandi.net) and School Psychologist Nelda Weber (nwber2@sandi.net) by 3 o'clock PM this Friday, March 25, 2022
Link to appeal form: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1A3SZR9p-GXZg96Fif3TEd8-SrV4XrLT5/view?usp=sharing
Finally, all third grade students, new-to-the-District fourth grade students, and students who are in private and homeschool placements will have the opportunity to be tested this summer. San Diego Unified will be handling all communication and scheduling. Please note that the District is still in the planning phase for these students. Any updated information will be posted on the GATE website; please visit it frequently for updates. You many also email gate@sandi.net with any questions.

UPDATED MASK POLICY
On Friday, San Diego Unified updated their mask policy based on new information from the CDC that put San Diego County in the lowest level of concern for the spread of COVID-19. Beginning April 4th, masks will no longer be required indoors for students, staff, or visitors. We will continue implementing all other safety mitigation strategies, including air filtration, weekly COVID testing, handwashing, distancing when possible, self-screening for symptoms, case management, and contact tracing.
The updated mask policy is a welcome change for some, yet the change may produce feelings of anxiety, fear, etc. for others Each family/individual will have a choice to make; some will choose not to wear a mask indoors, while others will continue to do so indoors and outdoors. Please speak with your child about the various choices that they and others may make. In addition, this is a great opportunity to have a family conversation about respecting and honoring people's choices, especially when they're different from our own. For families who opt to continue masking, it may be helpful to discuss various reasons why others would opt not to mask; similarly, for families who opt to discontinue masking, it may be helpful to discuss the reasons why others would opt to remain masked.

PROCESS FOR CHILDREN TO RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER HAVING COVID-LIKE SYMPTOMS
If your child is returning to school after having COVID-like symptoms, please do not drop your child off and send them to their regular arrival gate. Instead, please follow this process:

- bring your child to the front office to be screened by our health office staff (*Please note that our office can be very busy in the morning, so it may take some time to clear your child to return to school)
- bring a copy of your child's negative COVID PCR test and/or send it to nchau@sandi.net and ialam@sandi.net.
In addition, if your child has a chronic health condition with symptoms that mimic COVID, we must have this form on file; if we don't, we will have to follow the County's COVID-19 Decision Tree

Reminder to Parent Drivers at Pick-Up & Drop Off
Updated Information!- Families, in order to have less congestion during morning drop off, families can drop of their children at the entrance gate at 7:40 a.m. for them to walk directly to class. Reminder: School begins at 7:50 a.m.
If you are dropping off or picking up your child(ren) by vehicle, here are some important procedures that will keep our entire community safe and happy:
Drivers… Please DO
- use the loading zone and wait your turn
- continue to pull all the way forward
- be a good neighbor and citizen
- have your child use the crosswalk to cross the street
Drivers… Please DON’T
- swoop into the loading zone, cutting off cars that have been waiting in line
- park or wait in red zones, driveways
- have your children to cross the street between car
- wait in front of your child’s gate - keep moving forward
- stop to talk to teachers/parents
- double park
- make illegal u-turns in the middle of the street
Pick Up / Drop off Reminders
Here are a few reminders at drop-off/pick-up:
The school day begins at 7:50. Gates open at 7:40, the gates will close at 8:00. Students will need to enter through the office if they arrive more than 10 minutes late to school. When they enter the office, they will be marked tardy and then given a pass to go to their class.
Reporting Absences: We appreciate families notifying the teacher of absences; however, parents must notify the office of ALL absences by contacting our school clerk, Edy Aliagan, via email or ealiangan@sandi.net or call the front office at (619) 344-3000 to report absences. Notifying the office will allow for your child to be marked appropriately in attendance (ex. Excused Absence, Illness, etc.).
When picking up your child early, please pick them up just before or just after recess or lunch as it is difficult to take staff away from supervision to assist with looking for the student, escorting them back to the classroom to collect their belongings and then to the office.
If you have any questions, please contact the office at (619) 344-3000 or Amanda Diego at adiego@sandi.net.
