Season of Caring
ISB's National Honor Society (NHS) is leading philanthropic drives for four organizations, inviting the entire student body to participate. Their efforts were introduced to students at Season of Caring assemblies at the end of November. We have completed our annual Food Drive, partnering with the Beaverton Rotary Club to provide holiday baskets for families of Kinnaman Elementary students. Last week we collected clothing for the BSD Clothes Closet. This week we are partnering with the Cat Adoption Team to collect cat food and cat toys for shut-in seniors who need help caring for their furry companions. Next week there will be a coin collection for the International Rescue Committee. Students can donate in their Science classes.
Early Release / Collaboration Wednesdays
During December collaboration opportunities, ISB faculty teachers are continuing to work towards their goal of improving learning of all students. Last week, our learning time together involved all teaching staff focused on enhancing the connections between curricular units and service learning opportunities. Teachers met in grade level teams to identify interdisciplinary themes and revise unit plans to highlight service as action. Our theory of action is that by building these connections for students in the Middle Years Program grades (6th-10th), students will see real world applications of their schoolwork and will be more prepared for success in their Creativity, Action, & Service projects. This week teachers will meet with their yearlong Professional Learning Teams.
We Need Presenters for Our 2019 Culture Week!
We are in immediate need of 10 more Culture Week workshop presenters. Students, parents, faculty members, and community members are invited to present two workshops on Thursday, January 31, 2019. Each workshop lasts 40 minutes and it is a 2-hour time commitment from about 7:30 am until 9:20 am.
Specifically these annual workshops focus on experiences and information pertaining to cultural, international or theme-centered content. Our theme this year is People and Planet: Our Impact, Our Ways to Help.
Culture Week is a unique and special week offered to our students that includes one morning of workshops/information sessions provided by parents, fellow students and community members sharing a variety of international and cultural topics. Workshops include demonstrations, performances, discussions, and active sessions. Culture Week, which will be held January 29 through February 1, 2019, also includes a keynote speaker, international student assembly, daily craft/philanthropy, daily international snacks, and related curriculum. The week wraps up with an international celebration on Friday evening, February 1.
As a perk for parents’ participation, all ISB students of our presenters will be invited to pre-register for workshops.
If you are interested in presenting a workshop for our students, we would appreciate your expertise and your time. Please complete this formhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScwQ0dHXsHG85kfQ_9d6Tv4ojDrsSujWDK8X3M87Pmgm-UCxg/viewform no later than December 14th so that your participation can be confirmed. Information provided on this form will be shared with our students when they register for workshops in January. Questions or suggestions may be sent to CultureWeekISB@gmail.com.
If you know of anyone who might be interested in helping us with this request, please feel free to share this information. Our deadline for finding workshop presenters is coming up soon!

Submit order forms to Ms. Meyer in the office (checks written to ISB Student Body) and Ms. Johnson will deliver the shirt to your student.
Save the Date: 8th Grade Night - January 8th
8th Grade students and families are invited to attend an informational night for current ISB 8th Graders and parents/guardians on Tuesday, January 8th from 6:30-7:30 pm. This is the Tuesday we return from Winter Break, so save the date on your calendar now. This 8th Grade Night will provide information about how to interpret PSAT 8/9 score reports, ISB's high school program, as well as information about transitioning to a neighborhood high school or private school. All current ISB 8th graders will be enrolled to attend ISB in 9th grade, unless parents/guardians elect to enroll their child at another high school. We'll share that process during this presentation.

Southwest Mountain Ski Team
High school option-school students, it’s not too late to join the Southwest Mountain Ski Team! We have skiers from Mountainside, Westview, Southridge, ACMA, Aloha, ISB, and SST. This is a fun and inclusive group of students who train together but ski for their own schools. It’s a great way for Option School students to get to know other people throughout the Beaverton School District. The team has dryland practices through December, training at Mt. Hood over the holiday break, and races starting in January. All levels of skiers are welcome—from complete novices through experienced racers. There are also opportunities to stay at the mountain on Friday nights throughout the season with races on Saturdays. This team is very social and gets together for events throughout the year.
If you are in eighth grade, the team also allows provisional members who train with the team but do not officially race. It’s a great way to improve skills before racing in high school!
For more information, please see the website at www.southridgeskiteam.org, email swmtalpine@gmail.com, or call Sarah at 503.330.5346. We look forward to hearing from you!
Host Family Meeting
Welcome an international student to Beaverton this spring with Andeo International Homestays! French and Spanish teens are coming to the Pacific Northwest for 3-4 weeks to experience life, and school, as an American teenager. This is a great opportunity to share your home, culture, and language, and to learn more about Spanish or French culture. There will be a meeting on December 11th at 6:30 pm at ISB to share more details about the program and how to become a host family for a visiting teen.

Emergency Preparation
One of the most fundamental ways of being prepared for an emergency is understanding the emergency plan and/or knowing where to find it. Recently, Stoller Middle School was in an extended Lockdown and students were dismissed in a controlled release after school hours. This was understandably unsettling to all involved, but the school, district, and law enforcement agencies were able to immediately implement our Standard Response Protocol. All families are encouraged to become familiar with the differences between a lockout and a lockdown, as well as to keep their contact preferences for emergency alerts up-to-date. You can learn more about these topics here. In addition, this flyer provides important information about the controlled release process, including how you will be notified and what to expect when you arrive to pick up your child. As occurred in the recent incident in our district, a lockdown may lead to a controlled release or parent reunification. Please watch our Parent Reunification video below to familiarize yourself with this process.
If you get a notification about a lockout or a lockdown, the first place to check for reliable information and updates is the school and District webpages. The Public Safety Office puts up color-coded banners. You may also want to monitor the District's social media. Do not call or go to the school. Doing so could put you or others in danger. We will communicate with you via the District webpage and social media once we have more information to share.
Thank you for taking time to understand our use of the Standard Response Protocol and helping us as we strive to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff.
