General News!
Week of November 2-6:
Greetings! Last Friday our students began BLAST (Bobcats Learning About STEM). Each Wednesday afternoon until Winter Break, we will be exploring the invention of the telegraph, and how its usage may have changed the outcomes of the Civil War. We will be incorporating standards from all four content areas, and the students will be graded on their work during this time. A BLAST Partnership Agreement will be sent home with your child tomorrow (bright yellow paper!), and needs

Language Arts- Mrs. Groomes
This week we will begin gathering some background information about the Civil War era. We will be doing small research activities that should help provide us with a better understanding of the times, as we begin our second novel, Behind Rebel Lines, by Seymour Reit. The incredible adventures of Emma Edmonds, describe, " The true story of a Civil War spy who fooled the rebels- and her own troops!" Our Greek and Latin root study will include: mort and mori meaning death, nat, meaning birth, and vit and viv meaning life. A study stack link can be found in Google classroom. Please ensure your student read independently for 20-30 minutes each day.
Math
This Week in Mathematics:
Hello parents! This week we will be doing activities each day dealing with volume and how changing one measure affects the volume if the other measure is left constant. We will be having a mastery assessment on Thursday and Friday. Students will take the constructive response part on Thursday and the multiple choice part on Friday. The mastery assessment will cover the Pythagorean Theorem, Converse of the PT, Pythagorean Triples, the distance formula, and volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres. In class tomorrow I will be giving students www.thatquiz.org test codes for them to do for homework this week to review/practice for the mastery assessment. Students were also given a project last Thursday to work on using the distance formula to plan a trip across the United States. They have a requirements sheet and a map. The project is due Monday October 26th for blocks 2-4 and Friday, October 23rd for my 5th block. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Looking forward to a busy week.
Social Studies- Mrs. Bense
This week we are discussing how events of the Revolutionary War affected Georgia colonists. On Monday students created flash cards for the new vocabulary words. I have also created a study stack. It is under Bense8 and is called GA in the American Rev. I will be in training on Thursday and Friday. Students will be assigned work that I expect them to complete in class and will be graded. They will also be receiving their next in class project. This will be a fake Facebook page over a famous Georgia Historical Figure. Students will have the choice to do this by hand or on their chrome books. As always, they are free to work on it outside of the class. Please remember that there is an online textbook at mystatehistory.com and the password is gamsh17
Science- Mrs. Jackson
Our studies in science take us to the issue of Energy and the use of fossil fuels in the world. This is such a valuable source of energy that causes controversy in many circles. Students will learn about these sources of energy and will develop a written argument supporting their opinion on using fossil fuels. Talk about the issue at dinner and see what your child thinks about this. It will help them see the importance of the issue and this writing assignment. Thank you!
