ACE Women's Network of Ohio Annual Meeting Recap
Lifting as We Climb
The theme of this year's ACE WNO meeting--Lifting as We Climb--highlighted the importance of building relationships and sponsoring one another to promote women's leadership success. Panelists and workshop facilitators--including Wright State's very own Julia Acosta, Director for LANA Affairs--carried this theme forward by reminding participants of the value of connecting with others to collaborate and support shared goals. We all lead lead when we help one another to succeed.
In addition to its annual meeting, ACE WNO provides resources in support of Ohio women to promote their success in higher ed leadership, including annual scholarships and leadership awards. Learn more about ACE WNO, find a scholarship, or nominate a colleague for an award by visiting their website: https://www.aceohiowomen.org/.
Save the date for next year's ACE WNO Annual Meeting: November 1, 2019 at Edison State Community College, Piqua, OH.
Congratulations to Hyejin Kim and Donna Braswell!
Hyejin Kim (CoLA) and Donna Braswell (CoSM) each received travel support from the Office of Faculty Development & Leadership and the Office of Latinx, Asian, and Native American Affairs to attend the ACE WNO Annual Meeting. A big shout out to both for participating actively in WxLN meetings and posting during our first social media "Shout Out!" campaign. It was great seeing these fabulous womxn leaders at the meeting!
Readings & Resources on Womxn's Leadership
Check out these recent readings and resources for womxn's leadership:
Dancing on the Razor's Edge: How Top-Level Women Leaders Manage the Paradoxical Tensions Between Agency and Communion (Zheng et al. 2018, Sex Roles, 79, 633-650) reports a qualitative study of women leaders' experiences balancing expectations to be competent and yet still "nice." Check out the examples of how these women have learned to accentuate the right skills at the right time to navigate this tension.
The Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) recently revamped their website to raise awareness of the services they offer beyond the annual leadership institutes. Any individual can now join the HERS Network to receive e-mails about HERS workshops and other resources. Join their network to receive news and updates about regional workshops to support women in leadership.
McKinsey Annual Report on Women in the Workplace offers a national lens on women's representation across various levels of leadership and organizational settings. Although the report is not focused on higher education per se, it has valuable perspective on gender equality of relevance across employment sectors.
How Masculinity Contests Undermine Organizations and What to Do About It (Harvard Business Review blog) summarizes provocative new research on how some workplace settings reinforce competition among men with implications for both men's and women's success in the workplace.
