If you are like me, you are struggling to locate viable, credible news lately and while I do not have all of the answers, I feel it is my responsibility as your media specialist to inform you of the best tools and strategies to help navigate this tough time with our students. The best advice I could give in a time of uncertainty and misinformation is to teach deep reading skills, promote an understanding of bias, and encourage the consumption of multiple perspectives. Melissa Zimdars, an assistant professor in communication and media from Merrimack College, clearly stated the media debacle in 2016, that of which still holds true today. "Even typically reliable sources, whether mainstream or alternative, corporate or nonprofit, rely on particular media frames to report stories and select stories based on different notions of newsworthiness. The best thing to do in our contemporary media environment is to read/watch/listen widely and often, and to be critical of the sources we share and engage with on social media." I hope that these resources help you navigate the media in our world and may some of these resources assist you in supporting our students as consumers of news media on various social platforms.
