The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of January 29-February 2!
Message from the principal
Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place on Monday, February 5th, from 4:00-8:15pm in the UHS Commons (lunchroom). Our traditional Parent/Teacher Conferences offer families two opportunities to connect with teachers and school staff in a more face-to-face way.
These are drop-in conferences where teachers are available to visit in person. A list of teacher dinner times are listed here. Teachers will not be available during their 30 minute dinner times. The following link shares when coaches and directors will be present for conferences on February 5th.
We welcome all family members and students to come be a part of these opportunities for connecting and improving our partnership aimed at helping improve students' overall experience and learning.
Our second night of conferences will be on Thursday, March 1st, from 4:00-8:15pm. Look for more details on that night to come.
Iowa Assessments are coming up one week from Monday. UHS freshmen, sophomore, and junior students, will be taking Iowa Assessments the mornings of Monday, February 5th, and Tuesday, February 6th, between 8:00am and 10:00am. Most students will take these important assessments with their Connections teacher unless told otherwise.
During those mornings, seniors who have not completed their CPR requirements for graduation will be meeting with PE teachers. Otherwise, seniors do not need to attend school those mornings until 10:00am.
Letter from Iowa Testing Program regarding Iowa Assessments:
"Dear Parents: In the next few weeks, your child will be taking the Iowa Assessments®. Information about your child’s academic achievement is needed to help them excel and succeed. The Iowa Assessments make this possible by providing detailed information about your child in a variety of important content areas including Reading, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
- The Iowa Assessments help determine how students are performing on the state curriculum as described in the Iowa Core.
- The Iowa Assessments measure student growth and progress from year to year.
- The Iowa Assessments help teachers identify a student’s strengths and identify areas that may need additional emphasis. The assessments produce information that enable sound decision making and provide a focus for teachers to evaluate their instruction.
- The Iowa Assessments provide information about your child’s performance relative to the school, the state of Iowa, and the nation.
Using the results of the assessment, we encourage you to work together with your child’s teacher to identify and address educational needs. The results will help prepare your child for the next step on their educational path"
Together we can achieve our vision: UHS will change the world!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

FRIDAY guest speaker for freshmen:
We were approached with the opportunity to have a guest motivational speaker—at no cost to us—come speak to a group of our students about the power of words. His name is Eric Samuel Timm, and his organization is called Painting Hope, as he weaves art and painting into his message.
This special assembly for all freshmen will be on Friday, February 2nd, during Connections and most of 3rd period. The teachers of 3rd period classes are aware and planning accordingly knowing that freshmen will be missing 3rd period.

ATTENTION Juniors - National Council on Youth Leadership - Applications due February 14th

Ms. Watson and Ms. Fullmer will be asking students to write a short song with a minimum 30 seconds of audio (max of 3 minutes) using their amazing talents both vocally and instrumentally, independently or in collaboration with others using the GarageBand software and royalty free music and beats. The only other content requirement for the song is that it use the words "UHS will change the world" within the lyrics.
LMC users will vote on their favorite song on February 1st & 2nd. Winning persons or teams will receive 5 LMC learning center passes in advance to use within 2 weeks of the challenge and their song will be played during passing time before or after connections a few times. We would also share their song on our social platforms (Snap, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube).
