Happy March!
Merry March! This month students have been working very hard on their transportation, groups of ten in two-digit numbers, reading with expressions, and Nonfiction books! We have been focused on working as a team--kindness, communication and compromise.
Math
In Math students have been working on composing and decomposing two digit numbers into groups of tens and ones. They began with their teen numbers (11-19). First we learned we could decompose these numbers into a group of tens and some loose ones. Then we wrote addition sentences to match: 16 is made up of one group of 10 and 6 loose ones, or 10 + 6 = 16. We played games with bear trains and games with matching cards. After we masters teen numbers we moved on to two digit numbers. We have learned how to count and draw the slow way and the fast way. Students use lines to represent a group of ten and dots to represent the groups of loose ones. This makes it easier for students to draw a picture to represent a large two digit number like 68.
Reading
In reading students have been working on reading with expression. Students have been practicing reading quickly and taking appropriate pauses (when they reach punctuation). Students have also been working on Problem & Solution--when a character has something they want or need but can not have. We have discussed Character Traits-we pay attention to what a character says and does. In Phonics students have been working on the silent E. Silent E's make our vowels say their name. They have been practicing building the words using magnetic letters or writing them on our fundation's boards. We have also been practicing our digraphs and blends.
Writing
In Writing we have been working on our new unit: Non-Fiction books! Students wrote their first books last week and began work on their table of contents. This week we researched a topic using the non-fiction books in our library, we filled in a graphic organizer to organize the facts we learned. Next week students will begin writing their second books!
IB
With our curriculum share coming up, students have begun to work on their transportation projects! They got into teams, researched one type of transportation, drew a model, and began to build their modes of transportation! They are looking forward to sharing their knowledge in the coming weeks.
Our teams discussing which recyclable materials they would need to replicate the parts of their mode of transportation.
