Warner Update
Making a difference, one person at a time
Setting a Standard (Nov. 30 - Dec. 7)
As a young man in my early 20's I walked into a high school classroom in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I can still see the rows of old wooden desks, the sunshine hitting the floor through the second story window, and me shaking hands with the teacher.
Moments later I was startled by a loud bell signifying the beginning of the school day.
I sat towards the back of the room and I watched the teacher greet students at the door. I witnessed the interaction and the connection. Teaching in inner city Fort Wayne requires confidence and humility. This was on display as the classroom teacher got the day started.
As my observation ended I had a moment to thank the teacher. I won't forget what he told me.
"You are going into education and that means you have a responsibility. Sometimes you will be the teacher, sometimes you will be the role model, sometimes you will be the counselor, and sometimes you will be the parent."
I was reminded of that moment when I recently read this story...
"In Target at Triangle Town Center. A kid came in looking for a clip-on tie for a job interview this afternoon. The store only had regular ties, so a Target team member took the time to help the nervous teen put on his new tie, tuck in his shirt and then showed him how to give a proper handshake and tackle a few tough interview questions. As the kid exited the store, a bunch of supportive Target team members cheered him on! THIS is what it means to go above and beyond - Right on the mark, Target!"
During the month of December the focus will be on Service. As educators we wear many hats. We are teachers. We are counselors. We are psychologists. We are role models. And in our own ways, we do parent.
I encourage you to take time and embrace teaching of soft skills. An important part of growing is enjoying the responsibility of serving others.
