Summer Reading
Prevent the Summer Slide!
Dear Wildcats,
We’ve had a great year reading and learning at WSES and it’s been a joy watching you grow as readers! Now summer is here and only YOU (with help from your parents) can help prevent the dreaded Summer Slide! Research has shown that students who “take a break” from learning during the summer months can lose valuable skills and “slide” back, losing months of learning. Libraries and websites have free activities during the summer! READ!!! It doesn’t matter what YOU read, as long as YOU read SOMETHING!

Listening to books on CD or podcasts is a type of reading. If you are taking any road trips or spend any amount of time in your vehicle, try listening to a story or two to stay mentally engaged and entertained. “Keep reading aloud: Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books even if your child can't. This builds listening comprehension skills and will increase their knowledge and expand their experience with text, so that he/she will do better when they read on their own.”
Here are a few places to get stories on the web:
eBooks and Databases
Don’t forget that you have access to PebbleGo, Tumblebooks, My Capstone Library, and BookFlix (Username is wsprings and Password is books), and our Destiny catalog (Username is student ID and Password is student ID). You can also access many other great databases and sites through KCloud ( Username is student ID and Password is keller).
Reading Bingo Blackout
We will continue our reading incentive program, Reading Bingo Blackout, next year. Why not get a head start over the summer? Print your first card (red) from the library website. Return it when school starts, and you’ll be well on your way to reading over 100 books!
Click on the link below. You will find Library under Academics. There is a READING BINGO tab at the top of the Library Homepage.
