Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
This week's Marzano strategy is setting objectives and providing feedback. Objectives can help students understand the importance and practicality of what they are learning. Feedback can serve a variety of purposes, including helping students understand if they are on the right track and areas they can improve upon.
The simplest way to include students in the process of setting goals is with a KWL chart. These charts could be started as bell work and completed as a ticket out the door, or used more long-term purposes. It may also be beneficial to share these as a class to show students other perspectives and takeaways from the lesson. Click this link for more ideas and info about KWL charts.
Feedback should be timely and specific to a criterion. While not every assignment will be tied to a rubric, this grading approach is ideal for things such as projects and papers. There are a number of sites where custom rubrics can be made, with one of the most popular being Rubistar. Allowing students to see the rubric before the assignment helps them understand how they will be graded and the areas they should focus on to submit their best work. It's important to provide feedback to students within a reasonable period of time. This helps students understand their strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, it can prevent them from practicing and turning in work when they misunderstand the content.
Can't repeat the past? Why of course you can.
