Dear WHS Staff,
Below you will find some information for the upcoming week!
WHS Welcome Back to School Reverse Parade - Friday, August 28th
On Friday, August 28th, WHS will host a “Reverse” Parade to welcome our students and families to the 2020-21 School Year.
Each family will have an opportunity to cruise the parade route during a designated time slot. It is important that assigned time slots are honored to allow this event to run as smoothly as possible. Time slots are as follows:
Last Names:
A - C: 1:30- 1:50 p.m.
D - G: 1:50- 2:10 p.m.
H - L: 2:10- 2:30 p.m.
M -R: 2:30- 2:50 p.m.
S - Z: 2:50- 3:10 p.m.
Important Notes:
For the safety of everyone, social distancing guidelines need to be followed. All WHS family members are asked to stay in their vehicles!
Please follow the parade route. The beginning of the route is at the back of the school and is ONE- WAY route. Enter the route from Madison St and turn South on Stewart Ave.
All Grade 1 - 5 Grade Families will turn left out of the circle drive and then exit west on E. Harding Rd.
KINDERGARTEN Families ONLY will turn right after traveling through the circle drive. They will have an opportunity to park in the slanted spots so that the KDG student and parent can exit the vehicle to get their picture taken at the Hammerschmidt Sign.
Rain Date will be Monday August 31st.

Remote Learning Guidelines: Joint Communication from Administration & LEA
You may recall receiving a similar communication last year. The administration worked jointly with LEA Leadership on refreshing this document to reflect new guidance. Please review when you have a moment, as it contains a great deal of information to help you be successful during this time of remote learning.

WHS Garden Update
A handful of families helped maintain it over the summer. Hayden W. and Helen T. painted garden markers for the plants. WHS alums (Claudia W., Emma S., and Alison H.) weeded, watered, and helped clean out the shed.
Here is what is going on:
Kindergarten Garden: Flowers (perennial and annuals), strawberries, lettuce (This plot is probably finished for the season. Maybe you'll get a strawberry or 2 in the fall)
First Grade: Tomatoes (Lots of harvesting right now)
Second Grade: Pumpkins (I have several in my garage and am happy to drop them off at the school if anyone is interested)
Third Grade: Chives and Watermelon (2 watermelons currently growing under the chicken wire, possibly more)
Fourth Grade: Cucumbers and Dill (Lots of Swallowtail caterpillars found on the dill this summer. Hayden W. raised and released at least 10 with her mom, Michelle. They have lots of photos)
Fifth Grade: Tomatoes, Peppers, Nasturtium, Marigolds
Around the garden plots: Sunflowers, mint, milkweed. Blueberry bushes near the benches.
In sum, we are harvesting tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers daily. 4 pumpkins are available and several still growing, along with 2 watermelon. Mint, chives, and nasturtium are available for harvest, and some dill.
Things to think about for future:
1. Garden plots are very low on soil. They would benefit from added soil and compost.
2. Outside the garden plots would benefit from wood chips. The weeds get very bad very quickly. The Still family has access to cardboard and would be willing to donate it to put down before adding wood chips.
3. 5th grade Junior Troop 55355 is interested in putting together an educational presentation on the Monarch butterflies for garden visitors. Contact is Ellyn Gaynor
