Stanwood Middle School
Family Message - October 16th, 2021
Good morning Stanwood Middle School Families!
We have completed our 30th day of school this week and we are looking ahead to conferences at the end of the month. Conferences this year at Stanwood Middle School will be held Wednesday, October 27th and Thursday, October 28th.
Because of the limited time we have for conferences our teachers have been working hard to determine which students they feel are in need of conferences and will be reaching out to families this week. We ask that you hold off requesting a conference until teachers have reached out and scheduled conferences. I will send an update in our Family Message next week.
Costumes Allowed October 29th
If you have any questions about potential costumes please email or talk to Mr. Klundt or Ms. Christmas before you buy anything!!
Students can wear costumes during the day.
Students are still required to wear appropriate face coverings as per school district policy.
Students cannot wear full face masks as part of their costume and there should be no blood or replica weapons with the costumes.
Full face paint is also not allowed. Students can wear makeup, but their face must be distinguishable.
Please do not wear inflatables to school, in the past we have had issues with these in hallways and in classrooms causing distractions.
All other dress code requirements are still in place. Please make sure your costume is appropriate.
Also, if a teacher asks a student to remove a part of a costume during class (ie: hats or something they are wearing or a prop they are carrying with them that is distracting them from doing their work in class) students should remove it for the class period.
Picture Retakes - October 22
If you missed picture day, October 22 is our retake day. If you missed picture day or need to have retakes of your September photo this is your day! See the office if you need a picture packet.
Assessment
This week starts our fall SBA testing window. Students will take tests in math and ELA for last year's grade level standards. Sixth grade students will also take the fifth grade science test. Students need a charged chromebook and headphones each day!
Second Season Sports Registration
Basketball and Volleyball registration is now open using this link: Basketball & Volleyball Registration Form (Second Season). We will need a hard copy of your physical and emergency information form in the office. Please call Tia Hannawalt at 360-629-1350 if you have any questions.
At this time, it is uncertain what the JV program will look like because we are the only district in our league offering JV (other districts will be cutting athletes). Students who do not make the varsity roster will have the opportunity to play at the JV level. We are still determining what this opportunity will look like for our athletes within our district.
We currently have limited transportation in our district for after school athletics/activities. For out of district transportation at the varsity level, it is possible for parents/guardians to transport their athlete to away venues. If parents/guardians are able to transport their athlete, there is a waiver that needs to be completed. It is not required to transport your athlete, but if possible, would greatly help with getting all eligible athletes to away events.
Finally, students playing basketball will need to be tested for COVID prior to each game if they are unvaccinated. Please see the guidance below for more information.
Twice Weekly COVID Testing for Basketball and Wrestling
Per the K-12 Department of Health Requirements, screening testing is required for all unvaccinated athletes in high contact indoor sports (basketball and wrestling). This is not a new requirement, this requirement has been in place since August.
Fully vaccinated athletes do not have to participate in screening testing. Screening testing must be performed twice weekly using a molecular or antigen test. A rapid antigen test is performed on all unvaccinated athletes within 24 hours of the competition. In a multi-day event, testing will occur before each competition. The second test during the week will be performed 3-4 days prior to or after the competition and may be a molecular or antigen test. If a molecular test is performed, the athlete does not need to isolate while awaiting screening test results, unless they are exhibiting symptoms.
Please contact us if you have any questions, 360.629.1350.
Have a great weekend!

Community Agreements
During the last two weeks, students worked with our counselor, Ms. Fischer, to develop community agreements for our school. These agreements focus on respect, kindness, and equity. A big bravo to our school for their work.

Family Communication
October 15, 2021
Hello Families,
I would like to share some progress we have made toward returning schools to a more traditional setting. Although we are not yet ready to open our schools to outside groups, we are ready to allow schools to safely plan for some events. If a school has an event or activity that they would like to host, we have developed a request process that requires schools to outline the requested activity or event and the school’s plan and ability to comply with all state and local safety requirements during the activity or event.
Requests made by schools will be addressed on a case-by-case basis by our district COVID health and safety response team. Although this is not a full reopening of all extra curricular activities and community partnerships, it is a step we believe we can take safely.
SHS Open Gyms/Athletic Facility Use
Similar to the message above, we have engaged in a process with Stanwood High School to safely open the athletic facilities to current students. The high school will be communicating their process and safety measures to families and students soon. The allowable number of students in our facilities will be less than it would be in non-COVID times, but this is a positive move for students and our community.
When to Stay Home from School
We know it is hard to miss a day of school, but we feel it is important to reshare updated guidance from the Department of Health on Staying Home When Sick. Further information on when to keep your student home can be found under the COVID tab on our website.
Early Reminder of Fall Conferences
October 27th, 28th and 29th are early release days for parent-teacher conferences. The
schedule for those days will be 7:40 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. for secondary schools and 9:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m. for elementary schools. Please note that the 27th is a Wednesday but is not a late start day. Schools will soon be reaching out to you to schedule conferences. You will have the option to attend in person or virtually via Google Meets. Please contact your student’s school if you have questions.
Hiring!
We are still looking to hire talented and passionate members of our community to work in our schools. Specifically, we are looking for substitute teachers, bus drivers, paraeducators, and an electrician. Please share this information with others or apply online yourself through our SCSD Employment Page.
