Hello Lopez Families,
We just finished the volleyball and football seasons and it was great to see so many students involved and working hard for their school. They all did great! If you didn't get a chance to see our 7th grade girls volleyball team play during the season, you really missed something special. Both A and B teams went undefeated and won the district championship. Coach Welch and Coach Davidson had the girls in top form and they did not disappoint. It was really one of the best 7th grade groups I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. And then there was Theater Arts. The Cinderella production was top notch, it was very entertaining and the kids did great! Mrs. Eanes always puts on a first class show.
I need a little help from the parents for this next part. Please speak to your children about the following points so we can all be on the same page and work together as one:
- District policy states there will be no costumes worn during the school day on Halloween. If your child comes home and says it is ok, tell them you know better. Please address it with them ahead of time because they might throw something on once they get to school not thinking that it will be a problem.
- Please speak to your children about how they talk to others and the language they are using. I am not just talking about cursing, but saying negative things that can sound like threats, even if there is no intent. We have had several cases where someone reports what sounds like a violent threat, only to find out it was just friendly banter. We have also had some of these that were not just friendly banter and were just plain inappropriate. Please tell them not to get caught up in this behavior because it is going to be very hard for administrators to distinguish between the two and will result in consequences.
- Please remind the students about dress code and especially the length of the shorts. The fingertip rule can be frustrating, but leaving a grey area as a rule has been even more so in other places I have been. One thing I am asking you to speak to your children about, is to truly follow the rule. The athletic shorts are a particular sore spot. The girls roll up the waistband to where their shorts are too short. They get sent to the office and ask if they can just roll them down to their original length and get back to class. We want nothing more than for them to get back to their learning environment. The problem is, they roll them back up later in the day. That leaves us with either banning the athletic shorts or giving consequences. Neither is ideal but we are going to start with consequences for defying a directive. Please have that talk so we do not get to that point
Our PTA is partnering with the Nimitz Middle School PTA this year and they are asking for our help in a service project. I worked as an administrator for four years at Nimitz and I know how a little help can go a long way. There is always a place in my heart for that community. For the month of November, PVSA would like to sponsor a food drive to help Nimitz develop their School Pantry Program. I've attached the proposed flyer. Throughout this school year, we would like to offer more opportunities to support our Partner school. PVSA service ties in directly to our goal at Lopez for students to put the Seven Habits into practice. There are opportunities for them to lead, whether or not they are in a club that already participates in service. We are excited to help develop opportunities for them to serve. Please view the video below, from my friend Dana Stolhandske, principal of Nimitz. (Flier is at the bottom of the page)
Thank you for all you do,
