Positive Psychology Corner....By Dr. Miller, LPMHS School Psychologist
A sailboat can have full sails and a beautiful day, but if there is not a steady person at the rudder the sailboat cannot track straight and make progress. If a child is a sailboat with sails full of wind, a caring adult is the steady person at the rudder. Have you ever known a child or adolescent who lost their way, like a sailboat without a rudder, after losing somebody important to them? A caring adult is extremely important in a child’s or adolescent’s life. More than one caring adult is ideal, but sometimes one person is all that it takes. Caring adults come in all sorts of forms; parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, coaches, family friends, the list goes on. Parents are the most important caring adults in a child’s life, but having caring adults outside of the home is also very beneficial. Young people with caring adults in their lives may be less likely to have behavioral problems or difficulties with mood. They may be more likely to complete tasks, participate in productive activities, and remain engaged in school and learning. A relationship with a caring adult promotes positive well-being.
According to Marilyn Price-Mitchell, PhD, a developmental psychologist, here are some qualities that make a good caring adult. A caring adult is supportive and encouraging. A caring adult listens and understands before speaking. A caring adult holds high, but manageable expectations. A caring adult genuinely values and is interested in the young person’s life and progress. A caring adult helps a young person make good decisions, but doesn’t impose their beliefs on them. A caring adult helps a young person step back from a difficult situation and put it into perspective. Step up and be a caring adult in the life of a child or adolescent. It can make all the difference.
