I hope everyone had a great fall break and was able to relax and spend time with family and friends. We are very excited to begin our second week of in person learning this short week of school. Students learned this past week how to check out library books from our librarian Ms. Goritsas, by using Destiny and going to the link: https://destiny.dvusd.org/ from the DVUSD start page. Students should be working on the Amplify reading website 30-40 minutes a week. If your child is still needing their login information, please have them ask their teacher. We will be learning to quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. We will use our story selection to determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details of the text; include how characters in story or drama respond to challenges, how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic, and a summary of the text, as well as compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact). In writing, we will continue with our persuasive essay using the focal text of Green City that we began last week.

Math
Thank you for a great first week back in-person! I loved seeing everyone, and we are off to (another) great start of this school year! We are beginning to shift our instruction from multiplication to division. Long division takes about two weeks for students to truly grasp the hang of it, and we slowly show the standard algorithm. In order to accommodate all students, as well as allow students who can not attend in-person instruction the same instruction, Concept Development and Exit tickets will be pushed out through Canvas in addition to their math binders. Students who attend in-person instruction can have the option of doing their exit tickets in their math binders, or on the computer. They also can use the Concept Development videos as another added layer of review-- however, if your student was there for the in-person lesson they are not required to watch the Concept Development videos. We will be taking our second Math Inventory on October 19 or 20, and I am so excited to see all the growth and progress everyone has made! As always, please reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns!

Science
In science our essential question is "How do substances combine or change (react) to make new substances?". This week we will have begin a unit that helps students develop the concepts of “substances” and “chemical reactions.” Students see that chemical reactions enable us to make new materials by transforming the ones we have. The results of these reactions are interesting and sometimes profoundly useful. In our first Mystery, students meet the alchemists, a historic group that used “potions” to try to transform materials. In the activity, Test Like An Alchemist, I will test liquids to see which ones will clean the tarnish off a penny. Then, when one penny changes from dark and dirty to bright and shiny, we’ll have a chance to think about where the tarnish went.

Social Studies
We are wrapping up learning about he different regions of the United States and landforms that make up our country. We are moving in to the founding of our nation. We will learn about the struggles of coming up with a form of government that people would agree on. We will learn about the development of our nations system of government and what it means to be an active citizen. Students will reflect on how our lives and our communities might be different if we did not have the US Constitution.
