LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES
Pre-Reading Hook
Reading
- 3.5: The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fictional text and poetry.
- 3.6: The student will continue to read and demonstrate comprehension of nonfiction texts.
Teaching Ideas
- Create a graphic organizer using an online organization tool such as Webspiration or Popplet for two the following: create story map of Finding Winnie, show cause and effect in Finding Winnie, identify the main idea and supporting details in Wild About Bears, and compare and contrast the author's purpose in each book,
- Students will identify each nonfiction text features (such as headings, maps, glossary, and captions) in Wild About Bears and tell what information was given in each feature.
Library Connection
- The librarian will instruct students in the use of digital tools for creating graphic organizers.
AASL Standards
- 2.1.2: Organize knowledge so that it is useful.
Writing
- 3.9: The student will write for a variety of purposes.
- 3.12: The student will use available technology for reading and writing.
- 3.11: The student will write a short report.
Teaching Ideas
- Students will write a letter to Harry Colebourn. In the letter give advice on what he needs to do to take care of Winnie properly. This advice should include tips on her diet and habitat.
- Students will conduct research on a specific type of bear using a combination of electronic and print resources.
- Based upon their research, students will use the writing process to create a short report on a specific type of bear. Upon completion of the final draft, reports will be used to create a digital presentation.
Library Connection
- When completing the above research, students will utilize electronic and print library resources. They will learn basic search terms when searching the library catalog for resources.
- Students will use online presentation tools, such as Prezi or Smore, to present their reports.
AASL Standards
- 1.1.6: Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format in order to make inferences and gather meaning.
- 2.1.6: Use the writing process, media and visual literacy, and technology skills to create products that express new understandings.
Science
- 3.4: The student will investigate and understand that adaptations (behavioral and physical) allow animals to satisfy life needs and respond to the environment.
- 3.5: The student will investigate and understand relationships among organisms in aquatic and terrestrial food chains.
- 3.6: The student will investigate and understand that ecosystems support a diversity of plant and animals that share limited resources.
Teaching Ideas
- Focusing on bears who are becoming endangered. create an info-graphic presentation listing the animal's needs, how the bear's needs are being disrupted by humans, and what can be done to solve the problem.
- Students will create a model of a habitat for a specific type of bear.
- Students will create an interactive food chain for a specific type of bear, from the original producer to the top consumer.
Library Connection
- For the info-graphic presentation above, students will learn to use web tools such as Piktochart or Easel.ly.
- Students will learn to use Popplet to create interactive food chains above.
AASL Standards
- 3.1.4: Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.
Computer Technology
C/T 3-5.1: Demonstrate an operational knowledge of various technologies.
C/T 3-5.4: Exhibit personal responsibility for appropriate, legal, and ethical conduct
Teaching Ideas
- The teacher will model how to get to electronic resources for research using a desktop, laptop or iPad. Students will use at least one of these technologies when conducting research.
- Students will learn why it is important to create citations for references used during research. They will create a reference list with citations for all sources used.
- Students will learn how to find images to use in presentations that are in keeping with copyright and fair use laws.
Library Connection
- Students can learn more about copyright, plagiarism, and fair use by watching these videos. The librarian will show requirements for basic citations and help students construct citations.
- For all digital presentations created in other subject areas above, students will find and incorporate images that are deemed acceptable for reuse. Students will learn how to find and use these types of images.
AASL Standards
