Why is Sirius a tragic hero?

Sirius risks his life to save the people he loves several times throughout the series. This includes defending Lily and James Potter by fighting Peter Pettigrew, fighting Remus Lupin to protect Harry and his friends, and fighting Lucius Malfoy to protect Harry and his friends. He caused his own downfall by putting himself at risk for others not only when he died, but also when he was sent to Azkaban. Sirius teaches the audience that you can't always sacrifice yourself for others.

"I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You're not a bad person. You're a very good person, who bad things have happened to. Besides, the world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters. We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."
