Red Storm Forecast
Stonybrook Middle School November 2018
Message from Mr. Day
Hello Stonybrook Middle School Families!
I hope you all had a restful fall break and that your child was ready to resume school and have a strong finish to the second term. Upon return from break, my front office team and I met with all students and shared with them how we, as a school, are performing based on term 1 data. We discussed the importance of having attendance that is 96% or better, putting forth our best effort academically, and continually striving to improve our personal interactions.
I shared with them the results of a survey where our students were asked various questions regarding their perceptions of school. While students overwhelming reported that they feel respected by teachers and realize that teachers work to motivate them everyday by providing interesting lessons, less than half of students indicated that they arrive to school ready-to-learn, putting forth their best effort in every class, and assignment completion.
I am working on addressing these challenges by working with a group of students in our Red Storm Brigade. Meetings with 24 student representatives have just started and I look forward to collaborating with the students as we continuously improve.
Please continue to encourage your child's academic success by providing them a structured environment and a structured schedule. Quality sleep, nutrition, hydration, and engaging in academically supporting activities - whether it be formally at school or via other opportunities - is critical to their growth. Limiting access to smart devices and screen time is very beneficial as well.
This is a busy time of year in the life of a school. The next few weeks will be filled with the start of new athletic seasons, performing arts concerts, and end of semester assessments. As we enter the holidays, I truly wish you each a season full of blessings and time with family and friends. The entire SMS team is here to support you and your child any way we can. We are always just a phone call or email away.
Go Red Storm!
Mr. Nathan Day
Attention 8th Graders and Parents
Warren Central High School Counselors will be at Stonybrook on November 12th & 13th to talk to our 8th graders about their Freshman year at the high school.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR: We will have a parent meeting on November 15th at Career Fest at the high school so that your 8th graders can see the various programs we have to offer at the Career Center and so that we can talk about the electives in greater detail with the parents and answer their questions. More information will be forthcoming closer to the actual date.
News from MS. True, Assistant Principal
After a wonderful two week Fall Break, we cannot afford a gradual startup. The renewed vigor should help us be present everyday, and engaged. Our friendly Staff vs Students attendance competition from September was won by the students. Congratulations students!
October attendance is going strong at 96.6%. We will be rewarding students with 96% or greater attendance for the month of October with a special treat during lunch.
Students were reminded that he/she should be at school everyday unless an illness, medical appointment, or death in immediate family excuses him/her.
Parents, I have listed a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:
Make sure your child keeps a regular bedtime
Establish a morning routine
Lay out clothes the night before
Avoid scheduling vacations when school is in session
Please make sure you call the school when your child is absent. Let us know how we can best support you and your child. We want every child to be successful!

7th & 8th Grade Social Studies News
7th Grade Social Studies is currently working on Ancient Egypt. In this unit, students are learning about the importance of the Nile River to the formation of this hugely important civilization. They are also learning about the many creations that came from this civilization, like the writing system of hieroglyphics and architectural advancements like the building of the pyramids. We will also explore Egyptian religion, their belief in many gods, and the practice of mummification. This is a very exciting unit, and so far the students have seemed to really enjoy it!

Nicholson's Notes.. from the counselor's office
Grades for Term 1 were handed out during Parent/Teacher conferences. The first week back from Fall Break, students attended presentations from Mr. Day, Ms. True, Mrs. Rivers and Mrs. Nicholson. Mrs. Nicholson’s message was simple, “Dreams don’t work, unless you do.” Therefore, it is vital to a student success, to do school work.
Here are a few tips that might help your student succeed as the year continues:
Attend classes every day
Attendance Matters!
Participate in classes
Take good notes
Use Time Wisely
Eliminate Distractions!
Get Organized
Use your Stonybrook Passport daily - or other type of agenda
Get Help - Early
Talk to your teachers
Do Homework ASAP
Are you interested in finding a job? Need a Work Permit?
Before Stonybrook Middle School can issue a work permit to a student, the student must first find a job. Once a student has been told by an employer that they would like to hire the student, please bring the INTENTION TO EMPLOY or Intent to Employ card to Stonybrook. We can not issue a work permit without the Intention to Employ form.
In addition, work permits are contingent on passing classes and school attendance. Therefore, make sure you are eligible for a permit by being at school and doing well in classes.
