Reflections from our Postive Parent Speaker Series

Many Bridge Valley staff members and parents were able to attend Dr. Katherine Dahlsgaard's presentation, From Science to Parenting: Evidence-Based Strategies to Help Tame Your Child's Anxiety. For anyone who was unable to attend, listed below are some of her key points in helping parents support their child and reduce his/her anxiety. Click HERE for more information on our next presentation conducted by Dr. Jason Komasz, Growing Healthy Together: Tips to Live Healthier as a Family scheduled for February 18th.

Here are some suggested steps that parents can do to help children cope with stress:

1) Do not provide excessive reassurance.

2) Pick a guaranteed 5-minute time the child can voice worries. (IE before dinner)

3) Reinforce all brave behaviors with labeled praise: "You're a rock star because..."

4) Avoid paying a lot of attention to anxiety or failures.

5) Keep goodbyes short & sweet.

Blazer Blessings

Dear Bridge Valley Families:

During the Holiday Season the staff and students of Bridge Valley will be continuing our Holiday Giving Tree tradition, which benefit families of Bridge Valley. The trees will be decorated with tags. Each tag will have a person’s age, gender and gift suggestion. If your family would like to help a child or parent in need, please give your child permission to take a tag.

Consent forms will be sent home December 3rd in the Thursday folder.

The gifts must be wrapped with the tag securely attached to the gift and placed under the giving tree. This tag identifies the person who receives the gift!

In addition, each homeroom will collect food and or non-perishable household items that will also be distributed to the families along with the gifts. Many Bridge Valley families are assisted in this effort.

Tentative dates to remember:

  • December 3rd: Parent consent forms sent home in Thursday folder.
  • December 4th: Giving tree tags available and food items assigned to students.
  • December 18th: Deadline for food, household items, and gifts to be returned to school.
  • December 22nd: Gifts and food to be distributed to families.
