Types of Chemical Reactions
Austin Abernathy
Synthesis
Definition: The production of chemical compounds by reaction from simpler materials.
Equation: A+B ------> AB
Example: Mg + O2 ---> MgO
Decomposition
Definition: The state or process of rotting; decay.
Equation: AB → A + B
Example: Ca(OH)2 ---> CaO + H2O
Single Replacement
Definition: A chemical reaction in which one element takes the place of another element in a compound.
Equation: AX + Y ---> YX + A
Example: Cu + AgNO3 ---> Ag + Cu(NO3)2
Combustion
Definition: Chemical reaction in which a substance reacts rapidly, with oxygen producing heat and light.
Equation: CxHy + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O
Example: CH4 + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O
