PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Hidden River Middle School Families...
I am going to start creating a Short-Version message and Long-Version message for the upcoming principal's messages. The short-version is the same information, without explanation. For those of you who would like more context, simply read the long version. Thanks!
Short Version Principal's Message:
(1) Starting Monday masks are now worn by individual choice at all Monroe schools. We have emphasized with students the need to respect ALL individuals' choices regarding the use of masks.
(2) The registration window is open for our 6th and 7th grade students, for next year's electives. MHS counselors will be here next week to help 8th graders register for 9th grade classes.
(3) As we approach the 2-year mark of our schools shutting down this weekend, we are so grateful for all of your support and partnership along the way.
Long Version Principal's Message:
(1) Starting Monday, March 14, Hidden River Middle School students and staff will be able to choose whether to wear masks or not. We expect some individuals will continue wearing masks throughout the school day, others may wear them situationally, and others may choose to not wear masks at all. We have emphasized with students the need to honor and respect ALL individual choice around the use of masks, as we help students to come together around differences of perspective around any topic like this. We are also working with our students to continue practicing safe physical distancing in our classrooms, and will continue with our lunch routines where students sit with smaller groups of students to allow for physical distancing in that part of our schedule. We are so proud of our students and how they have handled the masks expectations for the past year at school, and are grateful for the opportunity to support each individual with their choices in regards to what they need to feel safe at school. Please let us know if there are things we can do to better support your student in this regard.
(2) We are in the midst of our registration process for the 2022-2023 school year! Ms. Chastain has visited all 6th and 7th grade classes, and students today had the opportunity to put their registration for next year's electives into our system. 8th graders have been provided video instruction by MHS counselors, are working through some long-term high school and beyond planning as part of our health and science classes, and are using that information to create a draft of a 4-year plan for high school courses. If you have an 8th grader, be sure to ask them about this plan and about their registration form! On March 17, all of our 8th graders will meet with counselors from MHS, who will be here in person to help them load the information on their paper registration forms into our system so the high school can start the enrollment and scheduling process for next year. This is an exciting time for all our students, to think about their lives as students next year!
(3) It is not lost on me the symbolism of this weekend-- the 2-year anniversary of when the announcement was made to close our schools related to the uncertainty around Covid-19. Today in our weekly webcast one of our students suggested we feature the following Ruth Bader Ginsburg quote: "So often in life, things that you regard in life as an impediment turn out to be great, good fortune." We talked about the challenges we have faced the past two years, the barriers we have experienced, and noted with students that the end of this story in their lives has yet to be written. While I don't think any of us is ready to point out the 'great, good fortune' of these circumstances yet, the hope that is present in this statement allows us keep taking positive steps forward with our students, helping them see that the challenges of our current moment can produce results that we do not yet see. That is the space we get to live in with our students as educators, and we are again so grateful for being able to do this work with them, and with you, as they discover who they are.
Thank you for your support throughout the journey of the past two years.
Jonathan Judy
Principal

This includes incoming kindergarten students. The deadline to turn in these forms to be considered for the 2022-2023 school year is Friday, April 1st. Forms received by this date will be reviewed and processed no later than April 22nd or sooner. Families will be notified shortly after. Late forms may not be considered until August.
As a reminder, all transfer forms must be renewed each year. A separate form is required for each child requesting a transfer. Forms are available online by going to https://www.monroe.wednet.edu/about/register-for-school/transfer-requests.
