Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
PSAT 8/9
Gwinnett’s 8th graders have an early opportunity to set their course for college and careers.
Duluth Middle School’s students in 8th grade will take the PSAT 8/9 on Oct. 16 at no cost. The PSAT 8/9 is a test that helps determine what students need to work on most so that they are ready for college when they graduate from high school. It’s part of the College Board family of assessments that includes the SAT college-admission assessment and the PSAT/NMSQT, a preview of the SAT. The PSAT 8/9 tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT and PSAT/NMSQT, but in a way that makes sense for 8th graders.
The test (includes Reading, Writing and Language, as well as Math) focuses on the skills and knowledge at the heart of education— what students have been learning in school and what they’ll need to succeed in college.
We will be stressing the importance of the test and explaining this to students through advissement lessons the next few weeks. Please support these efforts by starting to talk to your students at home about being focused and doing their best.
Great Turnout for Heritage Night!
Please join me in thanking all of our 6th grade language arts teachers for putting together a very successful Heritage Night celebration on Wednesday . Well over 100 parents and families brought food from their countries and enjoyed fellowship with all who came. A special thanks to Ms. Ishii who started this event eight years ago as a celebration of students' study of the book Seed Folks. Seedfolks is a short children's novel written by Paul Fleischman, with illustrations by Judy Pedersen. The story is told by a diverse cast of characters living on Gibb Street in Cleveland, Ohio, each from a different ethnic group.
Heritage Night was a great reminder of how we can draw on the diversity of our community to enhance students' learning. Great teamwork, achievement , and spirit!
Remember to come out for the Duluth Fall Festival tomorrow. We will be in the parade. Also, we will be part of the Cluster Steam Expo at Parson's Alley in downtown Duluth next Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 6-8. Come to view students' STEAM projects and enjoy the food and fun.
Need your help for PTA’s Wildcat Family Fun Day Saturday Oct. 19th, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Look for details next week! Bring the whole family!
Have a great weekend!
