Third Grade October Newsletter
Little River Elementary School
Important Dates and Information
During our SEL (social emotional learning) lessons in our morning meeting we have been talking about how the brain works when we learn something new. They learned every time they practice a new skill, the brain gets better at sending messages and it’s okay to make mistakes! We will continue to talk about strategies to try if they aren’t improving in their new skill.
A good example of this has been learning cursive handwriting!
Ask your child to explain what happens in their brain when they learn something new for the first time and what happens when they practice!

Morning Meetings
We have loved participating in Morning Meetings and we have already seen the positive impact they have on helping us build our class communities.
In the Classroom
Students should continue to read 20-30 minutes nightly. We are encouraging student to think while they are reading. In class they use post it notes to record their thinking or share their thoughts with a classmate or their teacher. This would be a great idea at home as well!
Writing Workshop: We have begun our second writing unit - "Crafting True Stories" where students will write a personal narrative (small moment). Students will focus on a SMALL moment and be encouraged to expand their ideas to include how they felt, what they saw, smelled, felt, tasted, heard, etc. Students will also be editing their work for capitalization, spelling and punctuation.
Math Workshop: We have concluded our number sense unit and have started computation and estimation. Students will be expected to add and subtract 4 digits numbers with and without regrouping. Students should continue to practice their addition and subtraction facts to build automaticity.
*For your reference, we have included some videos that may be helpful when working at home with your child. Please feel free to watch with your child.
Social Science: We started our year focused on science topics: Water Cycle and Matter, but will now focus on Social Science. We explored the purpose of rules and laws and the difference between them. We talked about contributions of a good citizen. We will begin exploring map skills where students will learn about the continents and the oceans.
