Roberts Middle School
GRIT: Volume 13
Dear Roberts,
Why is it important to keep Roberts uncluttered? Christina Scalise said, “Clutter is the physical manifestation of unmade decisions fueled by procrastination.” Take for example a dictionary; a dictionary is a list of words organized alphabetically.
If you open a dictionary and hypothetically drop all the words on the floor, you will have an assortment of words with definitions. Without the organization of the words alphabetically, the lack of functionality would make dictionary usage obsolete. . In this same manner, if you don’t clean the clutter in your mind, home, and workspace, can you be organized? A Princeton University study found that physical clutter in your surroundings competes for your attention, which results in decreased performance and increased anxiety and stress levels. Let me push even further into the realm of leadership; you will never get organized if you don't have a vision for the life you want.
Why am I talking about clutter? I truly believe that simplicity leads to focus . I believe there is power in going all in on one thing. Something magical happens when we focus all of our energy into whatever we’ve decided is most important to us.
Roberts, we do not like to complicate our instructional focus. As you can see, we have not changed our instructional focus in 3 years. We are hyper focused at getting better each and every day with small group instruction. To have an uncluttered instructional focus means that small group instruction is our one thing. I challenge you as the year comes to an end, to strive to live the uncluttered life. What in your life needs more attention and organization? Again, thank you for being amazing teachers. Thank you for bringing the JOY every day to work!
