3rd & 4th Grade Updates
Week of October 3
Happy October!
What We're Learning
We continue to work on mental math and estimation and my math group wil have their Chapter 2 quiz on Wednesday of this week. We take time each day to review mutiplication facts (1-12) to gain speed and accuracy. Please work with your child at home on these skills as they are essential to all third and fourth graders! If you need any additional resources, please email me.
Social Studies
Both grades continue to work on latitude and longitude, using them to find where a given point is on the globe as well as state the coordinates of a given point. The latter is a bit more challenging for many students, so we continue to practice it in class with games and worksheets. Third graders will start learning the states and capitals this week, learning 10 at a time and having a short quiz every week working toward mastery. Fourth graders should already know all 50 states and capitals; if your child does not, please continue to work with them.
Science
Our current focus is on weathering and the different ways that the earth can change. We watched a video last week as a means of introduction and will be working on two different experiments this week to increase our knowledge of different types of weathering, their causes, and their effects. If you have any pictures from places you have visited that show weathering, please share them with us!
Language Arts
Fourth grade excelled on their latest spelling test, with 20 of 22 students earning a 90% or above. To say we were all ecstatic is an understatement! This week we will begin reading ¿Qué hacen los ilustradores? and working on our next set of spelling and vocabulary words. Our next spelling test is Friday, October 14. In grammar, we will be working on the past and present tense.
Third grade has their next spelling test this Wednesday (since there is no school on Friday) on the words from El regalo de Destiny, which was attached to last week's Smore. We will be reading the story this week and working on vocabulary. In grammar, we continue to work on verbs like gustar.
Both grades have now started reading with our new PreK friends. See pictures below from last week! Third grade reads every Wednesday with PreK4 and fourth grade will be reading every Friday they are with me with PreK3. This is great practice for our kids and the PreK students love it!
