Evansdale Weekly Newsletter - Jan. 6th/9th Edition

Welcome Back Letter from the Principal

Dear Evansdale Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a fun and family filled holiday break. As we start the new calendar year and beginning of second semester, I challenge all eagles to come to school each day re-focused, re-energized, and ready to learn. I want to see all students ready to soar and excel throughout this semester. Speaking of soaring, we will be celebrating first semester academic success at Honors Day this Thursday, January 12th. Details and schedule can be found below. As you will also see in this newsletter, January is a busy month with many dates to add to your new 2017 calendars. I look forward to sharing a great second semester with you all.

Sincerely,

Luci Chattman

Mrs. Chattman's Marshmallow Reading Challenge

As you know, I challenged students to read every day over the winter break. For every 20 minutes each student read, he/she was to place a marshmallow in a Ziploc bag. All of the bags were returned last Thursday, January 5th. I am happy to report that over 2000 marshmallows were brought into school. The class who brought in the most marshmallows and won a Hot Chocolate Party with me is Mrs. Anderson's 4th grade class! They brought in over 420 marshmallows. I gave all classes who participated in the challenge bookmarks to encourage them to continue reading. Students can expect another challenge over Spring Break. Congratulations to all eagle readers who participated in this challenge!!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Chattman

Severe Weather Conditions Procedures & Communications Plan

Due to the Recent Weather Threat and Early Dismissal, We are resending this to ensure everyone is aware of county procedures and are receiving school communications (News from the Nest, Remind texts, eblasts, and phone messages)

The safety of students, personnel, and volunteers is paramount to Evansdale Elementary School during times of severe weather conditions. Emergency protocols have been established by DCSD and distributed throughout all schools within DeKalb. If there is a sudden severe weather alert, such as a tornado warning, students and teachers will assume the safety positions within the designated areas of the school.

Parents: Steps to take so you are informed during such emergencies:

  • Tune to local news broadcasts to receive the most current information about changing weather conditions.
  • Sign up for the Remind text alerts (see below for instructions) from Mrs. Chattman today. Do it before a weather emergency hits.
  • Download the DeKalb County School District Mobile App from your smart phone. This will give you updated information from the County in an expedient manner. Be sure to go into the app and follow Evansdale Elementary School.
  • Monitor the DCSD website - www.dekalbschoolsga.org for the latest information about weather conditions, school closings, early or late dismissal times, extra-curricular activities, and any other timely information.
  • PTA may also send out information via text and/or social media.
  • Parents may call the front office and/or attendance office with questions, however, communication may be limited in order to keep all personnel safe within the building. The telephone number of the front office is (678) 874-2702.

In the event of extreme and sudden weather conditions, students and staff will shelter in place and the school offices will be closed for check-out until an "All Clear" is given by the Central Office of the DeKalb County School District. Once the severe weather alert is over, the principal or designee will send out a text message through the Remind system to inform parents of the "All Clear" and the restoration of normal operating procedures. Please do not try to come to the school to check your child(ren) out during these times.

How to Sign Up for Remind Texts from Mrs. Chattman

In an effort to continuously improve the level and timeliness of urgent school communications, we are asking all parents and family members to sign up for Remind. This is a service that is not linked to school phones or wi-fi, so you should get texts as soon as they are sent. Join by clicking on this link - http://filecabinet3.eschoolview.com/A0E659DF-260A-4470-8A64-28B3F9BCB1DD/remind.pdf - and follow directions. Thank you!
