The Heaton Weekly
February 22nd-26th, 2021
Principal's Message for the Week of February 22nd
Happy Week of February 22nd Heaton!
Staff Survey
Please complete the Staff Survey--we want 100% completion from "All" Heaton staff members because your "voice" matters!
Mrs. Wilkinson sent out the link and we are providing time to complete it and prizes during Monday's quick Staff Meeting at 2:00p.m. Get your name on the Wheel of Wonder--must complete the survey to Win!
If you have already completed the Staff Survey, email Janine so that your name can go on the Wheel of Wonder (see below)! Don't Miss Out!
Also, to keep the competitive spirit alive at Heaton, there will be opportunities to Win more fun prizes based on this week's Heaton Weekly--so know what's happening at Heaton!
Cohorts on Campus
This week we welcome back our twenty Cohort Students to Heaton. They will continue with distance learning from Room 8--Cohort#1 and Room 21-Cohort#2 on Monday-Friday, and will be supervised by our awesome NTA and Teaching Fellows ASP Staff.
On Mondays, cohort students will connect with their classroom teachers virtually from 9:00-10:00 for Morning Meetings/SEL Lessons and to go over the Week at a Glance schedule. Students will work on Asynchronous Lessons from 10:15-2:00, with breaks for lunch, snacks and time for outdoor play. Students will head home at 2:00p.m.
We will also connect our Cohort students with our Heaton Expanded Learning Program for support on Asynchronous assignments and for Virtual STEAM activities.
It will be good to have students back on campus, as we support them with their online learning. Continue to send us names for our cohort waiting list.
Goal 2 Field Trips
Last Friday, Mrs. Ueno's Kinder students experienced their virtual field trip to the Zoo. See below for a few photos of their experience seeing unique creatures.
I commend our District, staff, and local businesses for keeping as many learning experiences available to our students, as possible during Distance Learning.
Be sure to sign up your class for their Virtual Fieldtrip on the link provided in the District Updates.
CSI and SEL/Second Step
Also on Friday, our Comprehensive Support and Improvement Team connected with our District and County CSI support providers for an all-day planning.
This planning is part of a three-year process of testing, analyzing and revising change ideas for school-wide program improvement.
The teaming and focus across our campus continues to align to the needs of our site and our students, and this is a big win for everyone!
Let's have an amazing week at Heaton!

Principal

Inclusive Lessons on CIPL
For the past few months, CIPL has distributed inclusive lessons to better reflect the accomplishments and representation of historically and socially relevant persons. We do this to build knowledge, foster a sense of awareness and empathy, and to help create a sense of belonging for students who identify with the highlighted focus groups.
This is work in progress, and while CIPL is creating lessons to honor national and locally recognized observances, we know these contributions need to be celebrated all year long.
To house these lessons, an Inclusive Curriculum webpage has been created on the CIPL internal staff page. https://fusd.sharepoint.com/sites/dept_curr/Pages/default.aspx

AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
From AVID CoP
I wanted to take a moment to remind you of the coaching sessions that are available to you as resource for attending AVID Digital XP this summer.
The 30-minute coaching sessions are one on one, where you identify a specific problem of practice related to the 4 big ideas of from summer AVID DigitalXP learning and we collaborate to develop potential solutions.
I have attached the link to Setting Up a CoP coaching session below.
'Heaton Voices Council' - African American Parent Advisory Council
We met for the first time on Thursday evening and had five of our Heaton parents attend. These were the following topics that were discussed:
- Climate and Culture of the school site
- Relationships among staff, students, and families
- Attendance
- Parents as Partners
- Parent questions/concerns
We will meet once a month to discuss various topics as it pertains to school data and specific needs. The process is faciliated by Kimberly Hendricks-Brown, who is an administrator at Parent University. Also present at the meeting Thursday was our CWAS, Cece Thomas, and district attendance coordinator, Kristi Jackson.
Updates and outcomes from our Parent Advisory Council meetings will be provided through Smores after each meeting.

School-wide Goal: By June 2021, Heaton math proficiency will increase by 10% as measured on SBAC (3rd-6th) and i-Ready Diagnostic Benchmarks (K-6th).
Teachers in 3rd-6th grades will be taking part in TNTP professional development Math Cycles in February, March and April, with a culminating meeting in May to celebrate our learning.
The New Teacher Project (TNTP) approaches mathematics and instruction through rigorous, grade-level content, concepts and aligned strategies to the Math Progressions.
Six of our Heaton teachers took part in similar training this summer for the Good2Great math summer program.
One of the strategies teachers learned and continue to implement is the Three Reads Strategy, which ensures students understand what the math word problem is asking them to do before trying to "solve" it. This is critical to student confidence and performance in mathematics.

CSI Goal: By the Spring of 2021, teachers and other adults at Heaton will increase and demonstrate high levels of positive interactions with students (collected on the 4th-6th grade student and staff surveys).
Change Idea to "Test"
As a school site, we will "test" the Change Idea "explicit SEL teaching/skill-building" from the driver Student Voice/SEL as one way to increase positive interactions between students and adults at Heaton.
See below graphics on the work our CSI Team has been engaged in this school year.

Staff-to-Student & Family Connections--Teens That Care Partnership
Before the Winter Break, Teens That Care made and donated a fleece tied blanket to every student in our Heaton Child Development Center, PreSchool and TK classroom.
Mrs. Dorothy Torosian, a longtime friend of Mrs. Goossen, started the nonprofit volunteer group to encourage and facilitate opportunities for teenagers to give back to their community.
For the "Heaton Hugs," project, Heaton donated the "Paw-themed" material and the Teens That Care donated the backing fleece and the student volunteers to make the blankets.
We named these blankets our "Heaton Hugs" since we cannot give our students an in-person hug or high-five during Distance Learning.
We have gifted nine of the eighteen blankets to our students to let them know we are thinking of them!
If you know of a student having a challenging time or perhaps had a loss of a family member, illness, or some other challenge, lets our Office Staff know, so that we can send them a "Heaton Hug."

Summary of January 20th CCT Meeting
* After reviewing the need assessments from the student's point of view in the survey sent out in December, it was overwhelming that students would like to participate in the following clubs: arts/crafts, gaming (Minecraft), science, and exercise (physical activities). The CCT sent out an email for staff that are interested in leading any of these clubs. There will be clubs in TK-3rd and 4th-6th grades. Students will be given the opportunity to sign up for these clubs once it is determined which staff members will participate.
Interested staff members will have a information meeting explaining more details. Clubs will be on Monday afternoons beginning February 22.
* Morning announcements will be recorded each Friday by administration and uploaded in the Heaton Elementary Teams site under General. Teachers will be able to show the video on Mondays from 9-10am. Every other week, a recording will be published to recognize our students and staff members of the week. This will be a separate recording from the weekly announcements.
* We will continue to focus on the student-student and staff-student relationships for the remainder of the year. Clubs and recognitions will connect our students with each other and with all staff members. Staff-staff events will continue throughout the year as that committee will send out information through emails and here on Smores!
Next CCT Meeting will be Monday, February 22 at 1pm. Notes from that meeting will be provided on our Smores update!
