Academic Information
Science:
We are finishing up our study of astronomy with a mini unit about our moon and its influence. On Friday, April 19th we will take a quiz over moon phases, eclipses, and tides.
Students should be able to identify moon phases and eclipses by picture and by placement on a diagram. Students should also be able to identify the type of tide based on the moon phase. Additionally, students should be able to explain how and why moon phases, eclipses, and tides occur.
On April 22 we will begin our final unit of the school year! We will be studying renewable and nonrenewable resources, conservation, and climate change.
French:
In 6th grade French we are beginning a new lesson over describing our Family (Lesson 1) and friends with Adjectives (lesson2). French Club is continuing to meet 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. Please refer here for a list of dates & exceptions. Before the end of the semester, French classes will have a get-together at a French café and a French Food party!
Spanish:
¡Bienvenido a la primavera! (Welcome springtime!) Our students are working on a project to develop their ability to describe their families, orally and in writing. First they will create a family tree including descriptions of themselves plus 10 relatives (including pets) in Spanish. Next, each student will draw his or her home showing themselves plus four other family members doing their favorite, or least favorite, activities. They will label the parts of the house in Spanish and write to describe who likes or doesn’t like to do which activities. Students will then prepare for an oral interview by writing a script and practicing with a partner. The oral interview will then complete the project.

Social Studies:
Three of the SS groups have gone to Biztown this week, and we truly hope they enjoyed their experiences! We will wrap up the personal finance unit middle of next week with a graded classwork activity. We will begin learning all about Australia at the end of next week. We will look at the continent’s unique geography, as well as some environmental issues occurring in the Great Barrier Reef. Then, we will look at how Australia structures its government and economy, while also reviewing the key terms associated with each of these topics. We will end the unit with a look at an overview of Australian history. Test dates for the Australian Unit will occur during the final week of school. As with first semester, this test will NOT be comprehensive of the year, but only cover Australia’s standards.
Reading:
Reading continues with our Transfer of Skills Unit and begins our 3rd mini-unit: Reading Informational Text. This mini-unit takes all the strategies and skills we have used in our informational reading unit and applies them to different kinds of questions we may see on standardized tests or in our ELA classes. This unit’s focus will be on development of informational texts, author’s purpose, and text features/structures.
Math:
6 On Level Math
On Monday some students will still be at the Junior Achievement field trip, the other students will be finishing their group projects. We will then be discussing independent vs. dependent variables and how to make box plots and histograms. Classes will begin reviewing for Milestones on Friday, April 19th and will review throughout the following week.
6A Math
Next week we will be continuing our statistics unit. We will be looking at samples and surveys to determine if a survey is biased or unbiased and what type of survey it is. Then we will compare data sets to analyze the two populations. The test will be April 19th and it will cover patterns in data, analyzing graphs (6.SP.1 & 2), mean, median, mode, range(6.SP.5), statistical questions(6.SP.1), samples and surveys(7.SP.1 & 2), and comparing data sets(7.SP.3 & 4).
Next, we will work on probability, beginning with likelihood of events, independent and dependent events, and compound events. Then we will do tree diagrams and the fundamental counting principle. (7.SP.5, 6, & 7)
7A Math
We are continuing with Unit 6 Probability. Students will learn about experimental versus theoretical probability, create tree diagrams and use the counting principle to find possible outcomes, and determine the probability of independent and dependent events. There will be a quiz on Tuesday, 4/23, which is our last minor assessment. We will then review for Georgia Milestones. 7th grade accelerated math students take the 6th grade math Georgia Milestones. In order to prepare, students will take formative assessments for the different standards and use their results to guide their individualized practice of the 6th grade math skills.
ELA:
In ELA, we will be finishing up our lessons on pronouns. We will then change gears into the three types of point of view in literature to ultimately better understand an author’s perspective. This will then progress into how an author develops their characters in fiction. We will learn the different types of characters and analyze them through fictional passages, or short stories.
Lastly, we will be reviewing and preparing for the ELA Milestones which will include practicing constructed response, and application of important ELA concepts that we have learned this year. We look forward to working together with you to help your child have a smooth Milestones testing experience in early May.
