The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - March 13, 2022
A Note from Principal Welch
Welcome to the week of our Fun Run, Walk, and Roll! I thank each of you who have registered your student at Boosterthon.com and have gathered pledges for this event. We are so close to reaching our fundraising goal of $15,000! I also want to thank those of you who have submitted for corporate matches through your employers, as well. This is such a fabulous bonus to our fundraising! Thank you! I am really looking forward to this fun event this coming Thursday from 2:00-3:05 PM. We have created two times for the event which is shared below. If you would like to come and cheer on your student(s), yes, parents and guardians are welcome. We ask that you do sign in outside the office and take a visitor sticker for the event. If you have further questions, do let us know.
This week also brings new masking optional guidelines at school. Beginning Monday, masks are now optional both inside and outside at school. Masks are also optional on school buses. I ask that you please talk with your student so they are aware of your wishes as it pertains to masks. We are not able to enforce each family's wishes at school, but we will continue to reinforce an environment of respect and individual responsibility. Our students have done great with the masking change at recess and I believe we will do the same moving forward. Thank you for showing respect for each student and family.
In the coming weeks, I will be sharing Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA) testing dates for students who are in 3rd-5th grades. In the spring, only our 4th and 5th graders took the assessment, but students in 3rd-5th will engage in the assessment this spring. I will share testing dates with you soon.
Let's have a great week! Thank you for sharing your students with us each day.
Take Care,
~ Jen Welch, Principal

Masking Option change
We will continue our batch testing as we move through these changes and continue with encouraging social distancing in lines and in the classroom whenever possible.
As we move into this next phase, I again ask for your respect for each other and respecting each family's choices with masks. Families will do what is right for them. Staff will do what is right for them. Thank you for being kind and supporting Cottage Lake being an inclusive environment for each student and family.

i-Ready online instruction available
After your students take the new winter iReady diagnostic assessment in the areas of Math and Reading, all students have access to an individualized online instruction pathway. The pathways are created from their iReady diagnostic assessment, which highlights their successes and areas of continued development and learning.
Students access their learning pathway by logging into iReady through their Clever page.
As a guideline, we would like students to be using this online instruction between 30-45 minutes, each week, for each subject (Reading AND Math). Some of our teachers are providing some time during the school week for students to engage in the online learning, but if you are able to have your students access this learning at home, that would be great!
Last week, we had 134 students access the online learning, with 60% of students accessing it between 10-29 minutes. Our student's average score for lessons passed was 84%. This learning tool has shown it can help reduce learning gaps and increase achievement for students.
If you would like to know your own student(s) time engaged in the iReady online learning from September to current, please reach out to Ms. Welch.

Lunch menu changes
If you are printing out the menu at the beginning of the month, there will inevitably be changes before the month is over.
Although our department strives to make changes at least 7 days ahead, there are weeks when we must make a change with 2-3 days' notice due to delivery shortages, today we have had to make a change to Friday's menu.
For up-to-date menu information please review our menu online (see the link below).
