January Newsletter
School District of New Richmond - January 26, 2024
Letter From The Superintendent
Dear SDNR Community,
On Monday, January 15, 2024, the School District of New Richmond Board of Education adopted a resolution to hold a capital referendum to address facility needs and community growth. The Board of Education appreciated the recommendations provided by our Community Facility Committee which spent months studying and preparing important information for the Board to consider.
This resolution came to the Board of Education from the Community Facility Committee, after months of collaboration between Wold Architects (the SDNR’s facility planning partner), the Community Facility Committee, and the District Administration. The committee consisted of 47 participants, which was composed of 8 community members, 23 parents, 12 staff members, and 4 students. The committee toured each school building and held multiple meetings to establish facility priorities based on various represented stakeholders.
The Board of Education then requested stakeholder feedback from the entire School District of New Richmond Community through a community survey facilitated by School Perceptions in late October. Engaging our community and hearing your voices was imperative to form a recommendation to the Board of Education that reflected the community’s response to facility needs and district growth. The results were then presented to the Board of Education in late November. The Board voted to pursue the referendum.
The referendum vote will take place on April 2, 2024.
Additional information regarding the referendum will be available in the coming weeks via website, email, district communication, newsletters, mailers, community meetings, etc.
Thank you for your continued support of the School District of New Richmond and the students we serve.
Sincerely,
Troy Miller
Superintendent

Empty Bowls Art
Student Learning Update
NRHS Art Department
In January, NRHS Ceramics students created numerous ceramic bowls. They practiced various methods and techniques including working on the wheel, coiling, and more. Students worked hard to roll and slump slabs of clay, trim their bowls, and glaze them. The bowls were then fired and set aside to cool. Once these bowls are completed, they will be available for purchase at the upcoming Empty Bowls Soup Night on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Thank you, NRHS Ceramics students, for all of your hard work and creativity on this project!

Hillside 3rd Grade Classes
In January, we were very busy doing mid-year assessments in reading and math. One benefit of these assessments is that they help us change our book clubs and keep students interested in the books they are reading together.
The students have been working with each other since October, and now they will get new book club groups at the end of January. The book club keeps students engaged in their reading by answering higher-order questions. They can also write down their responses in their journals or packets provided. We can't wait to read with new partners!
Paperjack 3rd Grade Classes
FREE global reading competition where PK-8th grade aged teams around the globe compete to read for the most reading minutes. The students are encouraged to read at school and at home. The competition takes place for four weeks.
Paperjack’s total reading minutes goal for the first week was 16,000 minutes. They exceeded this goal with an impressive week one total of 20,839 minutes! Stay tuned for updates on how many minutes the students read after the final week of competition.
The READBowl, also known as the World Championship of Reading, will declare its champions on Super Bowl Sunday, February 11, with Malcolm Mitchell making the announcement. We wish all of our READBowl participants good luck!
Starr 4th Grade Classes
We use a lot of manipulatives, patterns, and drawings to help us learn how to add, subtract, and convert fractions. Students also had the chance to work with small groups on targeted practice. This is a wonderful and engaging skill to practice and master.
