We have so much going on the next few weeks at Orenco so please take a moment to view the updates in this newsletter...so much that keeps us connected together and grows our learning! Family STEAM Night (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math)
- A daily materials pick-up the week of 4/26 that will include a fun at-home science project. 1-6 pm daily, and Wednesday 1-6.
- Virtual show from MAD Science that begin at 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm (Limited to 100 participants through Zoom, 30 minutes). Same show at both times.
- A variety of activities to choose from with teachers around our building (Virtual doors to knock on) from 6:00-7:00.

Spirit Day--Friday, April 30th
--grow seeds or tend a garden
--pick up litter
--recycle or reuse something in a different way
--turn off the lights and water to conserve
--identify a bird or tree or plant in your yard or neighborhood
--Use less of something
--take a walk or hike
--ride or bike or walk instead of using the car
--participate in Hillsboro's Water Department Calendar Drawing Contest
Students can do a Nature Scavenger Hunt and "turn in"/tell their teacher and get a little prize! The document will be in their Google Classroom as a material. There are TWO Scavenger hunts linked below.
State Testing Update
Opt outs are included in the letter link. Students may only opt-out of tests by using the official form or the google form included in the letter.
CDL Students are invited to test with us at the building on Wednesday, May 12th, 9-11 am. The test can only be completed in person. Transportation is routed for all students who can be routed on a bus.
Students in Hybrid: Will test during the Week of May 10-14.
We are here to answer any questions you may have!

News and Notes
- Our Materials Pick-up for students in CDL will now be available the last week of the month, 1-6 pm daily. Special materials will be available on Wednesdays, 12-6 pm for specific events or projects (i.e. Science boards, art projects, etc.) Students attending Hybrid will be given their materials in class.
- Boosters are sending home Jogathon Packets the week of May 3rd--including a t-shirt! Pick them up at the school if you are in CDL!
- COVID Reminders for Parents The attached newsletter (Sp/Eng) has some general COVID-19 Reminders Eng & Sp.docx info.
- Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week of May 3rd through May 7th. You do not need to spend any money, but a word of appreciation is always welcome, and free!
- Our character trait for this month is Empathy and our Justice Leader students are learning about empathy through is Mr.Rogers.
- Comprehensive Sexual Education and Violence Prevention (CSE) letter was emailed in March to all parent emails at Orenco. Please reach out if you have questions. Opt-outs are available and you may opt out of any lesson, or all. Our teaching dates are April 23-April 30. Here is the letter that was shared: LINK. Here is our lesson schedule: LINK
Kindergarten!
- Kindergarten registration for 2021-2022 began on Monday, March 1st. Registration for all grade levels began on this day, too.

Orenco Booster Fundraiser--SHOE DRIVE
Boosters are officially signed up for the shoe drive fundraiser with Funds 2 Orgs and will be collecting new and gently worn shoes from March 15 to June 15.
A Large Donation Box will be placed at the school for any drop-off donations. Drop Location: by the South entrance doors (cafeteria/recess entrance).

Hillsboro parks are home to hundreds of trees. How many of them can you identify? Whether the answer is none or every single one you can discover our trees in a whole new way by visiting a Hillsboro Pop-Up Arboretum. Starting mid-April, you’ll have a chance to get to know our trees through these pop-ups in Orenco Woods Nature Park and Century Oaks Park.
- The Hillsboro Water Department is holding a water-themed calendar "contest" for students in grades K-6. This year's theme is "Water in the Wild." Entries are due by May 7th. (See the pdf linked below for the information). Details have also been shared with teachers. (SEE pdf linked below for details and how to enter.)
Meals Update: Hybrid and CDL
- Breakfast is free and available for all students.
- Lunch is free and available for all students.
- Menus are available on the HSD site, and you can see available items here: LINK
- K-2 Hybrid Families: a meal pack can go home with your student on Tuesday afternoon to cover missing Wednesday at school.
- 3-6 Hybrid Families: a 3-day meal pack can go home with your student on Thursday or Friday afternoon, depending on if they are an A or B cohort.
- Please let your teacher know if you want these meals, and any student may take a meal home. We take DAILY orders.
- K-6 CDL Families: a 5-day meal pack is available, upon request, on Thursday 1-2 pm and Friday 2-3 pm at Orenco. Fill in the Nutrition Services order form to request 5-day meal bags no later than the Friday prior to the following week’s pick-up.
- Pick-up will be at the southside entrance of the building (playground side) Please call the office at 503-844-1370 and let us know you are here for your Weekly Meals Pickup.
- We accommodate and are aware of allergies. Safety and health first!
