Nipmuc Showcase 2024
The Nipmuc Showcase is this Wednesday and we are looking forward to hosting middle school students and their families. This annual event highlights how Nipmuc’s academics, extracurricular opportunities, and student life are helping students tap into their curiosities and blaze a trail to their futures.
The Nipmuc Showcase will take place this Wednesday, January 31 from 6:30pm-8pm with the inclement weather date being Thursday, February 1.
Incoming students and their families will have the chance to connect with our students and teachers to ask questions, tour the facility, and experience first-hand what life and learning look like at Nipmuc. The showcase will begin with opening comments by Mr. Clements and Mrs. Moran at 6:30pm in the Nipmuc auditorium.
We hope that you can join us for this event to explore Nipmuc and get excited about the journey into high school!
7th Grade Screenings
7th grade screenings will take place during the week of February 5th.
7th grade students are screened for vision, hearing, height and weight. If your child wears glasses, they should have them the day of the screenings. Scoliosis screenings will not take place until the Spring.
If your child is screened at your pediatrician and you want them excluded from school screenings, please contact the health office at gfarquharson@mursd.org or at 508-634-1589. A written note is also acceptable.
Message from the Health Center
What parents should know about energy drinks:
Just a friendly reminder that Energy drinks are not allowed at Miscoe per the handbook.
Here are some reasons why: With their neon colors and flashy designs, energy drinks are very tempting to young eyes and unfortunately tweens seem to be who the marketers are aiming at. Many of these drinks actually have a warning right on the can or their website stating they are not suitable for kids under 18. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that energy drinks should be totally off-limits to kids and adolescents. They often contain 5 to 11 times the amount of caffeine that is in a cup of soda or coffee. Plus, the FDA doesn’t regulate the amount of caffeine in beverages so you cannot always trust what is on the label. Something else that parents may not be aware of is that many of these drinks contain a variety of stimulants besides caffeine, including herbal supplements or other natural stimulants from plants. Energy drinks do more than make kids hyper. High amounts of caffeine can cause uncomfortable side effects and even harm a child’s health.
Problems include: sleep disruption, restlessness, jumpiness, increased anxiety, mood swings, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms and even seizures. Caffeine is also addictive.
Some healthier ways to give kids an energy boost are to move more, get plenty of sleep, eat balanced meals, take a multivitamin and drink enough water. Healthy alternatives to energy drinks are unsweetened, flavored seltzer, plain water infused with sliced lemons or berries, herbal teas (hot or cold) or low sugar sports drinks. Many of these energy drinks are designed to look like a regular can of soda so a parent may not be aware what it is. One of the most popular ones right now seems to be “Prime”, a drink that is highly marketed on you tube and higher in caffeine than some of the other energy drinks.
Volleyball Community Project
Hello families of Mendon and Upton! Below is a picture of members of the 2023 Miscoe Hill volleyball team. These teammates are embarking on a full year project to sustain and strengthen volleyball at Miscoe Hill Middle School and for the youth of our communities.
In November, they hosted a clinic and practice for 6th and 7th grade girls from Whitinsville Christian. They are planning on running a 6 week clinic in April with Next Step Sports Academy. LIke last year, they will be implementing a 2 day free clinic in June for Miscoe students.
These outstanding student athletes are very passionate about volleyball and they want to share their experiences with other kids in hopes that they will learn to love volleyball, too. One of their hopes is that a youth volleyball program will develop for kids in Mendon and Upton.
Another part of their project is to give back to our community. On February 16th, during the last period of the day, they will take their perfect season record and challenge the faculty at our school. Not only will this be a great send off before February vacation but there will be a collection for the Mendon Food Pantry. They will be collecting nonperishable food items and toiletries for people in need. They hope that students, families and faculty will help with this endeavor.
Items Needed:
