December LYNX experiences are posted in the FHS LYNX Schoology Group. Calendars can be found in the "Quick Links" and "Partnerships" folders. Students can access these interactive calendars to read a summary of available experiences and register using the linked Google Form.

FHS Class of 2021: Preparing for the Scholarship Process

Seniors had multiple opportunities in November to learn about "Preparing for the Scholarship Process" from LYNX Advocate Sandy Zimmerman (pictured below) and FHS Counselor Christine Alexander. Students, please continue to ask questions about the information and documents needed to apply for local and state scholarships. Our Student Services team is here to help!

LYNX Advocates Welcome 8th graders -- FHS Class of 2025!

Students in 8th grade at FHS feeder schools began learning about LYNX opportunities through virtual meetings with LYNX Advocates! 8th graders have begun their "Personal Stories" in Schoology and are already posing great questions regarding extra academic classes, theater programs, work-based learning opportunities, and other LYNX options. Welcome, FHS Class of 2025!

LYNX Scholars Explore Careers with LYNX Partners

November was a busy month! LYNX Advocates -- Ms. Kathy Koops, Mr. Marlon Moran, Ms. Beth Sands, and Ms. Sandy Zimmerman -- provided a variety of LYNX experiences for FHS students in all grades. Remember, LYNX stands for "Linking Youth to New eXperiences" and allows for college and career exploration while at FHS. Check out what we learned last month!

Alumni Connect with FHS Students Through LYNX

Forensic Investigator

Dr. Deb Frye, FHS alumna and Frederick County Lead Forensic Investigator, explained the protocols and job requirements as well as the observational and technical skills needed to be a forensic investigator. Students were impressed to learn about the documentation required, attention to detail, and other demands of the position!

Crime Scene Investigator

Paige Alexander, UHS alumna and Anne Arundel County Crime Scene Investigator, used a mock crime scene set up to explain the need to make objective observations. She also emphasized the importance of gaining experience through internships and selecting the right college preparation program before embarking on a CSI career . Thank you for your insights, Paige!

The Temple: A Paul Mitchell Partner School

FHS graduate Carlos Mairena (picture below, center) shared his successes as a illustrious alumni of The Temple: A Paul Mitchell Partner School! He advised students to follow their passions and detailed the benefits of working in the growing field of cosmetology. Sharon Riser (pictured below, left) and Liz Rapalus (pictured below, right) of The Temple also shared the amazing, high-quality learning opportunities at The Temple and inspired LYNX Scholars in a virtual meeting to pursue a future in the beauty industry.

New Experiences: Virtual Guest Speakers and Virtual Tours

USMC SSgt. Cook and LYNX Advocate Marlon Moran spoke with LYNX scholars about scholarships, becoming an Officer, and other career opportunities in the US Marines during a virtual LYNX experience!

Rehabilitation Sciences

Dr. Brent Rader, Director of Rehabilitation at Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute, spoke virtually with FHS students in Ms. Cosens's Sports Medicine class about careers in Rehab Science and what it takes to be successful in the field, and he expanded upon what they are learning in the course.

Auto Mechanics

Courtney Myles, Ford Certified Master Technician, met virtually with LYNX scholars interested in a career in auto mechanics! He took them on a virtual tour and imparted the keys to success in the field and how hard work pays off!

Madison Fields

LYNX Scholars interested in veterinary medicine engaged in a virtual tour of Madison Fields, a 400 acre horse farm. Staff members answered questions ranging from animal care to how the farm complies to environmental regulations. Part 2 of this experience occurs in December!

Soft Skills: First Impressions, Giving Back, Networking

Virtual Learning Lab

FHS Virtual Learning Lab (VLL) is LIVE! VLL provides students with access to teachers and advocates for academic support. Students can find the FHS Learning Lab under the "Groups" tab in their Schoology.

All FHS students (grades 9-12) can log in to the Virtual Learning Lab for academic support in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and CTE. Support for Special Education students and English Learners is available during all sessions. Students can also meet with a LYNX Advocate during this time!
